Is it true you should play guitar before bass? if so, BC Rich the answer?

hey i recently asked what a good beginner bass would be and gopher gave me a great answer... however on other boards and info from friends tell me i should most DEFINATELY play a guitar first then go to bass, since electric guitarists can move into bass rather simply and have a basic knowledge of strings/sounds etc, WHILE a bass cannot pick up a regular guitar and play...
With that information in mind, and gophers BC Rich suggestion along with many others, my question is, should i play a regular electric guitar for a short time and then buy a bass? or do you think that step should be skipped and jump on a bass? i have a limited knowledge of note-reading and have played a guitar maybe twice and i enjoy bands such as slipknot mudvayne korn hatebreed, etc.
I was considering the BC Rich Warlock, either the Mick Thompson package which seems too good to be true... or a Platinum Warlock Electric Guitar with Widow Headstock at $350, which i could buy used for $300.

Re: Is it true you should play guitar before bass? if so, BC Rich the answer?

Whie it's generally easier for a guitarist to pickup bass the main thing is what do you want to play first ? Starting out either way will make picking up the other much easier.

I'm not much on the BC Rich stuff, just don't like the tone or feel of em stock and wouldn't spend the $$ to modify one when for $300 you can get a much better (IMO) guitar, but if you are into the looks of them then go for it as they are fine beginners guitars.

Re: Is it true you should play guitar before bass? if so, BC Rich the answer?

Hey Mate look as someone who recently came from 6 string electric to bass it is a helpfull idea but only really nessecary to do if you are not going to be playing in a band or with any friends for a long time. Even playin with a guitar teacher is enough its jsut to keep you motivated as with bass you cant hear the song coming together and therefore it becomes very hard to get in time without playin someone else if you haven't played electric 6 string. And the BC Rich idea yeah isn't a bad guitar but im not sure if your in America if you are for $300 dollars i would be looking at something in a much higher bracket as im in Australia and i can pick one of them up easily for just over $350 if you are in America i would look at the yamaha because as a beginner they are sturdy comfortable (which the BC Rich guitars generally are not) which is important for long practice sessions and the yamaha range have incredible tone depth for the money you pay for them.

Re: Is it true you should play guitar before bass? if so, BC Rich the answer?

first off,BC RICH bass and guitars are not beginners.Thicker necks, wider bodys and odd shapes make for a tougher play for a beginner..i know i started on a BC RICH Mockingbird bass.

Second,if you want to play a bass, then start with a bass,if you want to play a guitar, start with a guitar.if you want to play them both, then choose witch one is more of a priority to you.dont waste time at first learning how to play a guitar if you are going to be a bassest.and vise versa,i have seen more people give up playing all together because of this..

i think that u should play what u feel good at. then maby play the otherone on the side. but i o

Re: Is it true you should play guitar before bass? if so, BC Rich the answer?

My main argument (if you will) for learning six string guitar first is because it will be much easier to follow lead and rythem guitars if you understand them. Visual identification of chords, etc. has saved me many times as a bassist. Just a thought! RonH

framus acoustic

my son has been given a framus steel-strung acoustic cello-built guitar mod. no. 5713 (or5153?)which has been broken at the neck. Does anyone know if this model is worth repairing (Cost est at £50)? It does seem to be a nice old instrument. Any info on this model would be greatly appreciated, brian.

Luther Perkins

Looking for infomation on style of guitar Johnny Cash's first lead guitarist, Luther Perkins. I know he palm muted stuff but not positive if did background on lower strings of barre chords, some type of alternate base or exactly what he was doing. Sounds pretty basic but would like to know for sure from anyone out there. I'm willing to listen to anyones input. Thanks. Rob Binns c3xsig59@yahoo.com

No. Luther did not use "barre" chords. I'm very close to some of the people who worked with Luther during his years with Mr. Cash and I can tell you that there is a difficult simplicity to his style that is hard to duplicate. A lot of people can play like Luther, but nobody has ever duplicated his sound - and forget Bob Wootton who replaced Luther after his death in 1968. Wootton only played a "Luther-style" guitar but never sounded like him i any way, shape, or form. Johnny Wester, perhaps, came the closest to duplicating luther's famous style, and was actually Cash's first choice to "fill in" for the spot that Luther's passing created. Luther was locked in tight with his technique by the time he left Sun in '58, and was able to get a tone from his Fender Esquire, Jazzmaster, and Jauguar that nobody has been able to replicate Whatever Luther did exactly he took with him to his grave. Carl Perkins admitted that fact some years ago in an interview with Guitar Player. My best advice is to listen to Luther and build your own style based on his foundation.

Re: Luther Perkins

I wanted to know what guitar did Luther Perkins Play the Most out of his Esquire, Jazzmaster, and Jauguar like for " Cry Cry Cry " and " Hey Porter" and did her use any types of pedal or anything? HankSnowi@aol.com

Re: Luther Perkins

Harry,
I believe Luther played a Fender Esquire on those earlier recordings. Also believe his last guitar at the time of his death was a Fender Esquire also. According to my sourses the first was a honey blond and the last a sunburst type finish. The Fender Jazzmaster was a 1958 and the Fender Jaguar was a 1961. Most of the effects or I should say, sound heard on those early Sun Records was is called studio generated "echo". Don"t think Luther used any seperate pedals or devices other than what was available on Fender Amps. at the time. He also had a Ray Butts "EchoSonic" amp built especially for him, but don't think he took it on the road with him very much if at all. It had it's own built in "echo" unit.
I do believe Luther used different effects, so to speak on different songs, such as Reverb, Tremelo, and so on. Most were built into various model Fender Amps., even in that time period. There has been pros and cons about how good a guitar player Mr. Perkins was. But don't let what sounds like simplicity and basics fool you. He was a great, original guitar player in his own right. His sound and style has been foundation for many guitar players over the years to learn and tried emulating him. That's one heck of a legacy if you ask me. Rob Binns, c3xsig59@yahoo.com

Hi
I bought a Castilla acoustic in about 1980. I still have it! Over the years, I have replaced the tuning keys with Grovers. At one time the neck/head joint started separating, and I had to put a dowel through the joint. At that time, I put light gauge electric strings on it. Since then, I have learned more songs on it than you can imagine. I love it and will nevver get rid of it. I recently had the frets leveled and the tech commented that the nut was real bone.

G+

can any body please tell me what this cord is. it's in a book from which i'm trying to learn a song and i've never seen it before.
THANKS

Re: G+

+ refers to an augmented chord, it's a 1-3-#5 chord, so a G+ is just G-B-D#

Some voicings (String - fret - fret -)

E-3-x-x
A-2-9-10
D-1-8-x
G-O-7-12
B-O-7-12
E-3-x-11

Re: G+

Re;G(+) The (+) stands for an augmented chord or aug. A commonly used form that can be used anywhere on the neck of the guitar I will try to explain. As I haven"t been on the computer very long I don'T know how to show chord shapes or any drawings for you so hopfully we can expain this out alittle. On a G(+) augmented chord left hand fingers Ist finger on the first string 3rd fret, the secound finger on the third string at the fourth fret, the third finger on the secound string at the fourth fret and the fourth finger on the fourth string at the number 5 fret. Do not plat the 5 or 6 strings and this can become a moveble chord. Meaning keep your left hand fingers in the same postion. The notes on either the fourth or first finger will give you the name of your chord. An example would be if you played this at the first fret it would be a F(+) or at say at the eighth fret it would be a C(+) and so on. I believe there is more out there on the Internet under "guitar chords". I hope this helps, good luck. Rob Binns c3xsig59@yahoo.com finger

BC Rich Platinum WARLOCK or Jackson XT WARRIOR

hey, its me again, heh. I narrowed it down to 2 guitars I want now. The Warlock and the Jackson Warrior. I played both and the Warrior was much more appealing to me, but everyone is telling me that the Warrior is not made for the novice because of the way it needs to be tuned.... Now, I may not know how now, but the way that guitar fealt in my hands.. I will figure out how to tune it. Does anyone have an idea about the difficulty of tuning the Warrior?
If not, Which one would you suggest anyway? Theres only a $25 difference, and I have the cash for this and a 15W Crate Amp, and some other gear like a strap and a Jackson gig bag.
Help me out if you can please.
Thanks in advance

Re: BC Rich Platinum WARLOCK or Jackson XT WARRIOR

HeyRez,
I know its always hard to find the right instrument. The most important is always, does the instrument feel comfortable to you.
Of course the to handle a Floyd Rose vibrato i much more complex than a normal one, especially for a starter. But wehn you've find you favorite setup (may be the guitar dealer will help you) than its much easier, and has more advaneges, because
you neednt to tune the whole system when you want tchange only one string or sth. Ask somebody who can explayn the Flyod Rose to you, its not taht complicated.
And honestly said, I've seldom seen such a butiful bodyshape as the Warriors one.
I also play a 15 W Crate amp. Its ok vor playing at home or connect it with an other speaker,
but if you want downtunings and a bit bass punch you schuld take a closed cabinet.
Eg a small Marshall.
I hope i could could have helped you. Bye

LEspaul serial

HI
I'm about to by a Lespaul whose serial is 23692. I don't know if it's a real one.
Where Can I know exactly the year and the model which owned this serial ?
thank you

Re: LEspaul serial

Go to Gibson.com. They have serial #s listed. But, it looks like yours is a 1961, if the serial number is correct. It should be stamped in the back of the headstock. Also, you can check to see if the headstock logo is from that period(by referencing other guitars).
