: I need some help trying to find some blueprints fo a 1960 4 by 12 guitar amp. I don’t know your "brand name" but I know that there’s a World Class Amp & electronics Engineer named Dan Torres with a lot of info at http://www.torresengineering.com. Might be worth a try, though he can not possibly answer all inquiries. I understand he is very busy and can only work 24 hours a day. I hope you are successful. Also, a google search for specific amp schematic diagrams could surprise you and save you the trouble of a prolonged inquiry. Strat Man Dwight

I recently won a Fender Stratocaster, made in mexico. It was raffled off at a movie premier for the festival express movie that was recorded in 1970 with Jerry Garcia and Janis Joplin along with other bands. The guitar has engraving in gold, Festival Express and a picture of Jerry Garcia and Janis Joplin engraved next to the Festival Express. The guitar is white with a light colored neck.

September 29, 2004 at 2:18 am #83642AnonymousGuest
is there any reason why you are not considering the Boss DD3? which would have been my first choice.
-
September 30, 2004 at 12:02 am #83783AnonymousGuest
the boss 3dd is much expensiver
-
September 30, 2004 at 3:09 am #123704AnonymousGuest
have a guess as to why that is? heres another thing to consider, how many pros do you know who would prefer digitech over Boss? im not saying the use all boss pedals, but they certainly make very good delays.
-
September 30, 2004 at 1:31 pm #125840AnonymousGuest
yeah, i guess you’re right, so… which one now… the boss dd3 or the boss dd6??
-
October 2, 2004 at 2:48 am #125917AnonymousGuest
depends on how much delay you want, check out the spec on them, but i dont like too much delay id go for the DD3
-
October 2, 2004 at 8:19 pm #126232AnonymousGuest
That’s fine, but options wise, the DD6 has much more to offer than the DD3 in case there ever was a time when a longer delay is needed. I don’t like too much delay either but I have the options.
-
-
October 1, 2004 at 2:43 am #126222AnonymousGuest
Personally, I’d go with the DD-6. It has up to 5 seconds of delay time and it has a Tap Tempo feature which really comes in handy.

Hi, My name is Earl Laney. A friend of mine gave me a dobro about 20 years ago. I got it out of the attic to looke at it. It is all metal body, painted shades of brown, at the head of the wooden neck it has tortise covering the front of the head with the name of dobro engraved in it. It is in the orginal case – the brown is starting to peel off. The metal is bright under the paint. Someone told me it was made between 1935-l940. It still had the strings on and was close to being in tuned. I was wondering what the value of a guitar like this would be. Earl Laney

: : I need information about a guitar named Simga guitars est.1970 model SG-7 Steinar … what would you like to know? Any specific questions besides value? I currently own one. These were made by martin of Nazareth,PA., of course, contracting out in the Orient, to make a guitar similar to their own short-lived E-18. Like the Martin, the Sigma has I believe a 9 piece body made of Maple with Rosewood splices, and a maple set neck with rosewood fingerboard. They have excellent pickups designed by DiMarzio, but made elsewhere. Martins had the real thing. There are 2 humbuckers and a 3-way toggle; no split/phase like the Martin. Other electronics are absolutely first class, with full size 500K audio taper pots and an ingenious treble bleed on the volume controls. Gotoh tuners, stop tail and a tune-o-matic style bridge were standard appointments. Workmanship is excellent throughout. These guitars sound very good, and should sustain virtually forever. All had natural finishes, and with the original Martin curly headstock they are not considered to be be the greatest in the looks department. I believe that the Martin company would be happy to provide any more info that you may require, except for value, as always. Strat Man Dwight (Canada)

to pay for guitar lessons? The guy says he is very thorough, and the lessons are 50 mins long. He comes to you as well. Am I getting ripped off or is £20 a lesson sound about right?
-
September 27, 2004 at 1:10 pm #83482AnonymousGuest
I pay £25 for an hour. Again the guy comes to me and most of the time the lessone over-run a bit. So £20 sounds pretty reasonable. The question to ask is if you need lessons once a week or once a fortnight. That really depends on how much time you get to practice.

Sorry man but the chances are slim, its one of 3 things now, 1 someones toy at their house where itll never be seen in public, 2 busted and broken, or 3 pawned off or sold to whomever had the money. sorry, ive had one stolen but i found it on ebay through pure luck and contacted ebay about it, it was the see thru black LTD M 302 the second one posted, ebay got it back for me and he was questioned for theft after i showed pictures of it and the identitification number which basically showed it was mine saying A it wasnt shown or described in the profile and B it had so many fuckin numbers no ones gunna fight with a dude but if its his or not if hes got all of em down, advice, take down your numbers, and all information, like serials on the pickups, trem, bridge system, all that, and stap your initials somewhere under a humbucker in the wood to prove its yours, goood luck, trevor : Searching for Blonde, Archtop Acoustic guitar. the way is clear and the path is clearly marked, warning signs are posted in flashing neon, when you walk on the fabled highway to heaven you must wear well appointed sandals, they must be of brown leather with a good hard wearing sole. practice at night, sleep during the day, change your strings at least once every 5 years, and most of all have fun. go in peace my son, and walk tall with pride.

Bass guitars tend to be bigger, thay have a longer neck, 6 string electric will take you longer to learn, and you will find a lot of competition should you want to get into a band, become a good bass player and you can get into any band, both guitars cost about the same kind of money, and similar prices for amplification.

No prob, I’ll have to remember that, but really, can I get at least like 200 bucks for this bass you think? It looks great, SG style, not beat up, chrome pickups, it looks really nice, sounds fine.

I have purchased what I think is a Les Paul Japanese "studio" guitar. It has a great Tabacco Sunburst finish, gold plated gibson pickups, and the bell top decal that says "studio" from the studio line of Gibson Les Pauls. Now what makes me think it’s a copy is it has a bolt on neck (!) and no Gibson or Les Paul Studio decal on the headstock. It does although have a 3-way switch in between the volume and tone controls like the new Slash Les Paul model has. It’s serial number is "E760872". I’m thinking Epiphone but I never knew Epiphone made guitars with bolt on necks or made a model with a toggle switch between the volume and tone controls….
-
September 26, 2004 at 3:13 am #83231AnonymousGuest
i think it is an epiphone and its made in Korea, and yes the koreans do make bolt on necks, the necks are usualy made of maple and these are the cheaper end models, in my neck of the woods the sell for about £100.

They were made in London by the Emil Grimshaw banjo company. I had one in the 70s and loved it to bits till someone knocked it onto a fireplace and the neck snapped. They are good instruments and if you are interested in selling I may be interested in buying.

Hey. I just got a Fender American Series Deluxe Ash Stratocaster off eBay because I was in contact with the seller, so I thought it was a safe buy. It was, the guitar arrived today, and it’s BETTER than my dream guitar. Anyways, I graduated from a Gibson Les Paul Epiphone Special 2 and it had a stop bar tail piece, and changing strings was easy. With this new guitar, it had a preamp and a Piezo Fishman bridge installed. I was wondering, how do I change strings. It appears the strings go down into the bridge, where my fingers don’t fit. If you know how I can change the strings, thanks. I blew the high E string when I was having some fun with this awesome tremolo.

October 2, 2004 at 8:43 pm #125889AnonymousGuest
Are you saying it is a guitar just because it looks like one? Because if that’s the reason, you are sadly mistaken. In 1946 Leo Fender crafted something called the Fender Precision Bass. It was supposed to relieve the bass player in the bands of that day from having to lug their double bass’s (or stand-up bass if you prefer)around to every gig, do you think that the double bass is a guitar? With the introduction of the electric guitar in the early 40’s by Gibson and Gretch, the ability to increase the stage volume left the bass player unheard. So, good old Leo thought he might create a bass that was more portable and one that could be amplified to keep up with the guitars. So, just because the electric bass LOOKS like a guitar it definitely is NOT.

How or is there a way to increase your pickups output? Is there some kind of wiring technique that can help me acheive this or should i just get replacement pickups w/a higher output rating. The pickups I speak of are passive.
-
October 1, 2004 at 10:26 pm #83960AnonymousGuest
Changing the pickups may help. What kind do you have now? If they are single coil with 250k volume pot, you could replace the pot with a 500k. That will give you a little higher output. If they are humbuckers it probably already uses a 500k pot, in which case you could try a 1 Meg pot. I sell them all on my website, as well as pickups and control upgrades. http://www.has-sound.com
-
September 23, 2004 at 2:12 pm #82934AnonymousGuest
ive not heard of any wiring tecnique to increase the output, replacements dont cost very much, if you are on a budget try the ‘kent armstrong’ range, if not then Dimarzio do some great pickups.

I have a Yairi Gakki guitar, 1973, clase 9000, with what appears to be serial number 3816. label says handmade in Japan. This guitar was owned by my step-father, and after he passed away, my mother gave it to me for our kids to learn. Neither of them had any interest, so it is just sitting in its case in our house. I’d like to sell it, but have no idea of its value. It is beautiful, looks brand new (no marks). My stap-father passed away in ’86, so if he bought the guitar in ’73, its been very lightly used. Anyone have any thoughts on what its value might be? I’m planning on going to a local guitar shop, but thought I’d get some info before I go.

is the TC the combo? or the head? and is your AC15 blue speaker?
-
September 23, 2004 at 3:06 am #82935AnonymousGuest
You can get the TC as a combo or a head. The vox I have has a blue back. I love the AC15, it’s amazing, but I need something that can get a little louder, so I decided to get an Orange AD30TC (or maybe not a TC, I don’t know, depends on what I’m offered, if anything), the AC15 is sooooooooo close though.
-
September 23, 2004 at 2:05 pm #110816AnonymousGuest
ive just bought an AC15, I had one about 2 yrs ago and sold it, worse mistake i ever made, its a fantastic amp, my friend has an Orange twin channel head, the 30watt, and a word of warning, they dont go very loud before they break up, dont expect to get a loud clean sound from it, if you want that then go for an AC30 (ive also had oe of those) that would be the better amp. but then of course you dont have the master volume on it. my advice, DONT SELL THE AC15!!! well not intil you have found a baby to take its place, and that is very hard to find.
-
September 23, 2004 at 9:36 pm #123616AnonymousGuest
I thought about an AC30 but I’ve heard that they don’t sound best until they are cranked but by the time you get it cranked and sounding good its extremely loud. Any advice? Like I said I LOVE my AC15 but I wish it was capable of getting just a tad bit louder. Travis
-
September 23, 2004 at 10:30 pm #125852AnonymousGuest
thats very true, its no bedroom amp, it gets very loud before it breaks, when then there is no amp to touch it, if you need loud clean go for the AC30 then if you need overdrive stick a pedal in front of it, the Orange is the complete opposite.

This may not interest everyone, but Nick is pictured on the cover of his album ‘bryter layter’ holding a guld m-20, and legend has it that this was his main guitar, but I have seen pictures in his songbook and other places where he has a totally different guitar – looks like at least a full size instrument, and one can see the logo of the mfr on the head, and in one shot one can see a serial number impressed on the end of the head. Unfortunately, the logo is too obscure to read, but it is definitely not a guild. Someone who had seen this logo before might be able to recognize it. Anyone have a clue as to what type of guitar it is?

I am borrowing (and considering buying) a 77 or 78 fender mustang, and I have a problem. The floating bridge seems to float a little too much – it can sort of rock back and forth. The tremolo, for instance, causes both the tailpiece and the bridge to move forward. that seems like it would wreck intonation to me. is it missing a part or worn down or just made this way? thanks a lot for your help.

The tremolo, for instance, causes both the tailpiece and the bridge to move forward. that seems like it would wreck intonation to me. is it missing a part or worn down or just made this way? thanks a lot for your help. Dave … yeah, remember a guy named Kurt, before the Foo Fighters, that had this very same problem. He even swore about it. Well, we have to patient & loving with our Mustangs. I had one and my daughter has one, also a Jagstang – almost the same. You are absolutely right in your questions. 50% of the Mustangs I have seen in the last 40 years have been missing parts. The other 50% are a little worn out, or have the parts altered or installed incorrectly and can be fixed. It is very common for players to turn their string bar upside down and "hardtail" them. But it is intended that the strings are inserted at the front of the bar, then wrap up & over heading towards the nut. Their tremolo is quite unique, and actually is not liked very well. I had to improve and construct a new one for the "Jag". You will have to remove the bridge and see what’s up. For sure the bridge plate needs tightening to the body, at the very least. Unlike stratocasters, this set up does not take very well to any form of adjustment. You could replace the trem springs and make sure they are being held properly. Then, just tighten everything up, especially the bridge to the wood. That string bar has to be just loose enough to rock, when you push or pull the arm. Mustangs & freeflyte tremolos do not keep intonation well. That’s just he way they are … but they’re not hopeless. Really … good luck. It’s great to see a Mustang that is playable, and doing what it’s supposed to… Strat Man Dwight

1966,1969 one of those 2 years, i know one of that year in the UK would be around £2000- £2,500. being in its original case would help, also the finish has to be untouched, original wiring and all hardware increases value.

I have a lovely Gibson 335, but after using kyser by Dr Stringfellows to polish the body and pick ups etc the result is a horrible smear. Is there any way I can get rid of the smear to leave a nice polished finish. I have used this polish on my Epiphone les paul with no problems. Thanks for any advice.

Is there any way I can get rid of the smear to leave a nice polished finish. I have used this polish on my Epiphone les paul with no problems. Thanks for any advice. Have you solved your problem yet? Is/was the smear mainly on the chrome-covered pickups or on the body itself, which is nitrocellulose lacquer? Gibson uses nitro and Epiphones use an acrylic, I think. Anyhow, the cause of your your smear was the natural oil in the Lem-Oil. There should be no harm done, with a few possible remedies for the situation. Also, in what condition is the finish on the 335? Now, I believe you can remedy the situation if all the facts are known. In the meantime, do not touch it with any more oils, especially those with a vegetable base and NO SILICONES which are in some guitar polishes. I’d gladly say "use this or that" but 10 guys might promptly disagree, and nobody has replied yet, so I see no need to cause a riot. I would try suggest something on a one-to-one basis, unique to your situation at this time, based on nearly 35 year’s experience with most finishes, metals and wood … with friends who are authors, authorities and actually wrote the book on guitar finishing. Sorry, this took so long. Strat Man Dwight

I have researched enough to state that it has the skunk stripe on the back, the metal plate though does not state a country it was made in SN 373683, it is beautiful with a dark violet finish, knobs and tremolo are black, I have pictures and would appreciate any help I may get in finding what type of Charvel this is. Beautiful w/blk Charvel case. It looks like a strat to me. Please any help would be great. Thanks

: what kind of strat has serial number "NC433565" where would it be made and when ?? : please help : thanks….jim Okay to say something in addition? I have 2 of these Strats currently. I assume you are referring to the serial number stamped on the neck plate. Even if numbered elsewhere, these are quite decent Squier Strats originating in National China. Nice thing about them is they have full depth bodies, and are solid Poplar, not laminates. I use them for testing modifications, and reviewed one of them with compliments on Harmony Central. They are circa 1994. Strat Man Dwight (Canada)

Hi, I recently bought a pawn shop cheapy strat copy that I wanted to set up for slide playing, so I wouldn’t have to be retuning my good axe, a Les Paul. It turns out this this little cheapo no name brand or maker actually plays pretty damn good. Great action on a really cool feeling rosewood neck. The 3 single coil pick ups are pretty decent. And except for the crappy tuners, the guitar might be worth investing to upgrade it. I started getting curious and trying to find out more about the maker & year of this guitar. The logo on the headstock was scraped off by the previous owner, but it looks like it might be a Lotus or Aria brand. Everything about this guitar looks like an authentic Fener Strat except, obviously for the headstock design and the more I play it, the more I want to set it up with some better hardware and tuners. It kicks ass. Some advise on how to identify it? Thanks Robert

If it is a Lotus you would be able to tell by the soft plastic covers on the pickups that get dirty easy, plus a thick neck and the truss rod adjustment has a cover. At least the Lotus guitars are not laminates. They are made of good wood but the electronics are pure garbage. The pickups aren’t that bad but the pots, switch and wiring are sucky. Buy what you want but know what you are buying unless it’s real cheap. I have fixed many a cheapy and anything can be made into a screamer but fixing up old stuff that is cheap is a habit that won’t die easily. Save and buy what you really want next time. A slide guitar has a higher action but you still want the quality you need. : Hi, I recently bought a pawn shop cheapy strat copy that I wanted to set up for slide playing, so I wouldn’t have to be retuning my good axe, a Les Paul. saw the body in half, if its 8 ply its crap, if its solid wood then you made a mistake with the saw, try taking up needlecraft instead.

: A lot of Strat copies have been made by a lot of companies. If the Logo that was on it used an oil base ink, you may be able to see it still. A fine mist spray bottle can be filled with water and sprayed on the headstock. The water will not stay where the logo was because of the oily residue left behind, if the wood has not been scraped down too far. Look at the headstock from an angle in the light and you may be able to see where the logo was and what it said. Of course, dry the headstock real good as soon as you finish. With as many copies that have been made it will be difficult to identify it, unless you have a serial number and model number. I have an Arbor Strat copy that is like what you say about this one. Gave $39.00 for it new in 1990 at a flea market. It was supposed to be a blemished guitar, but I couldn’t find a blemish on it anywhere. If the guitar you bought is a good playing and sounding one, then it is definitely worth putting a little money into for upgrades.

press down on the pedal with your foot, under the pedal is a footswitch, you need to press firmly all the way forward to activate it, then you can use the control knob on the side to switch between the various pedal expression effects.

September 29, 2004 at 11:14 am #83632AnonymousGuest
You just said what model it is basically but the E stands for Eighty and the 3 is the year so it should be a 1983 Fender American Standard Strat. The hardware, neck plate etc. might determine it as a specific type of American Standard Strat. There are lots of types but with what info you have given it is about all anyone can tell without looking at it. Ask your local authorized Fender dealer. Make sure the person you talk to is authorized. Of course it may be a no brainer and it could be identified by most anyone in some cases. : I have an American made Fender Stratocaster(Creme body) that I bought used back in 1987. Is it bad to rock the cry baby wah really fast for a long period of time to get a kinda tremelo sound? Thank you
-
September 17, 2004 at 5:48 am #82434AnonymousGuest
: It will add to the wear on it just as using it will, but it’s not "bad". If you need a tremolo sound you should get a tremolo effect. This will save on the wear of the wah and it will last longer.
-
September 18, 2004 at 3:50 am #82581AnonymousGuest
if you do wear out the pot inside the pedal you can easily get a replacement, they arent too expensive either, cant see anything else wearing out, they are built like sherman tanks. and the effect of rocking the pedal backwards and forwards quickly is a lot different to a tremelo effect, make sure you test the tremelo effect before buying.

It sounds more like a 1984 model since Fender didn’t have an official deal with a Japanese contract til 1982. I could be wrong but that is what I read in a Fender book about the Stratocaster. Hi, I recently purchased a new laptop with win.xp operating system, and plenty of memory. It has a program called sonic stage installed on it. I am a complete novice with anything that has to do with music so bear with me on this. My husband finger picks a martin for leisure and is actually pretty good. I was wondering if there was a way to plug the jack he uses to hook to his amp. directly to the line in, or mic jack, to my lap so that we can record some of his music to a file and then burn it onto a dvd/cd. So the first question is what type of software if any is there for this type of application. Also, what type of converter would he need to hook to the end of his amp plug to make compatable to the jack on my laptop. I have read a few of the messages on this site that sound like they may be refering to the same type of question I am asking, but the answers are so technical I havent a clue to what it all means. Also what type of file format would you save the guitar recording to, so that it could be burned. Last but not least I saw a company on this site advertising a software program called "cake walk", would this be what I am looking for. I realize your answers will more than likely be over my head but if you give me a/b&c to follow I will have a starting point, and my husband can take it from there. Thanks so much for anyone who has the patience to reply.

I want to learn to play the guitar but when I start a new thing I always research everything first. My main question is: Is it easier to learn on an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar? or is there no difference? Another question that I have is: Are any of the video lessons that I have found on-line any good? If so which one is the best? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Josh

Hey Josh, Electric and acoustic guitar are two quite different instruments. It isn’t better to start with one of them. Just choose the instrument your feel most for. If that happens to be the electric guitar, as in my case, just start with that. Explorerfanatic

When I got my first guitar,my mom told me to start on acoustic! She dragged me kicking and screaming to the music store."I wanna play electric music, darn it!!" So,she asked the guitar dude,"Shouldn’t he start on acoustic guitar?" The dude said,"WHY…I started on electric." I WAS BLESSED,man! As I matured a bit I slowly gravitated towards the acoustic. But I am an ELECTRIC player by nature…I grew up in the 70’s!

I started on a fairly cheap acoustic and then moved to an electric (still fairly cheap) and I can catagorically say that electric is easier and your fingers will be extremely grateful. It’s just a lot easier to keep the strings down. You can then buy an amp with acoustic modelling (like the Roland Cube 30, which is very good and nice and cheap) and make your electric sound like an acoustic if that’s what you want (although not completely like an acoustic). I’ve been playing for about 6 months and have both and still play both but in my opinion the electic is easier and offers more versitility and more instant gratification. In the UK we have a TV channel dedicated to musicians and it has beginner, intermediate and advanced guitar shows on it that are very goood. The biggest problem I have is with Theory. I still can’t get my head around it but then I think I started a bit late (late 30’s). Best of luck, and have fun.

I want to know what the best amp for under 600 dollars is. I want a good amp that has the largest range of tones in the price range. I as close to crystal clear cleans and house wrecking distortion. I want the warm clear ring and still have the deep thud of a nice palm mute… Suggestions?

Why do you have these, where did you get them, why hasn’t Leo Fender returned from the grave to kick your door in and drag you out? Do you have a criminal record? Are these real? Did you print them on a Testor’s model car decal kit as sold at Walmart? When are you going to get a job? Did you clean your room? I’m looking to buy a Fender Mustang; Competition or otherwise. Vintage unimportant, as long as nothing’s too broken and its in one piece. Is $100 like $500 American in Canada? That’s what you’re looking at unless you scalp one at a yard sale from an unsuspecting seller. Mister those are worth quite a bit if vintage try buying a new copy and see what they sell for. A JagStang is $529 at Musician’s Friend. Good luck. I ain’t saying it can’t be done but web surfers aren’t that generous. : I’m looking to buy a Fender Mustang; Competition or otherwise. Hi, I have a Standard Baladeer Ovation, made in the US. My friend played a few times and it got scratched by the nails on it´s solid top. My guitar has a very high gloss finish, I guess it should be polymer, would any one share a tip on how } polish out this scratches made by the nails?, I´ve tried with rubbing compound (automotive) and it just got worst. Thanks. Jorge

Every single book out there will tell you. Cut your friggin nails. Make a choice 1.short nails 2. choose another instrument 3. buy a static cling clear pickguard that is removeable-(best idea). Scratches are what add character, part of reality (nothing lasts forever). It’s a throw-away guitar anyhow (plastic back). Scratch it till it bleeds or has a Willie Nelson hole in it. What doesn’t show wear? Sex parts show wear even if you spit shine em. : Hi, I have a Standard Baladeer Ovation, made in the US. im with you Jorge, i think scratches add character to certain guitars, the only guitar i regulary polish is my Rickenbacker 360/V64, it a fireglow finish and its like glass, those ovations are too, he does need to cut those nails, never wear a jacket with a zip when playing as those zips can scratch the back of the guitar (although the ovations have plastic backs so thats the least of your worries). in short, if you love it then take care of it. and willies Trigger has a fantastic tone.

Fender do a polish kit,it comes with 3 types of polish and a special cloth, they made it with an american car (think it was macintyre or something like that) polish firm, ive used it and found it to be very good, i know others on here have found it not to be so good, give it a try, the compound polish you used is far too harsh, try the fender kit.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico Theme This is the main theme from O’nce upon a time in Mexico’. It is taken from the title sequence as El Mariachi walks around dramatically playing his guitar… you know the one! Two guitars, although the second guitar doesnt come in until the middle section. The ending was made up to replace the horn section in the song. yeah but a Cello is soooo cool, nothing impresses the chicks more than when you pull your big old boy out of the wardrobe, trombone sounds like a very loud fart on steroids, you cant woo her with that mother! how many guitars has she seen in her time?
-
September 17, 2004 at 5:30 pm #110784AnonymousGuest
You can woo more chicks with a guitar! Plus,it’s more portable. So,it won’t matter if it’s her place or mine. Try playing chords on a cello………

Well man, I love the guitar, and there is no doubting its diversity. But the fact that you are considering the cello must mean something. You do not say what kind of music you are into. Close your eyes and invent a tune in your head; does it suit bowing or plucking? There are squillions of guitar players out there. If you want to stand out, go the cello. Remember you can still use all kinds of effects and techniques. A cello/guitar duo works really well, as the cello can go as low as a bass guitar, but a lot higher, being tuned in fifths. You can pluck bass lines and still take moaning solos. You can also tune a bass guitar like a cello if you choose the right guages, and this is a great second instrument for a cellist. Whichever you choose, make the effort to get really great and you won’t regret it.

Go for the Cello, nothing looks cooler than one of those mothers slung around your neck, just a bigger version of the paul macartney bass, I know i shouldnt fall for this, but what did the Cello group advise? (this has to be the best wind up yet)

I just recently bought a Takamine F400S 12 string guitar and I would like to put a pick-up and preamp in it. Does anyone have and suggestions or recommendations about what brand or model pick-up I should get? I would like it to be a good price, as well as good quality. Thanks for any help you could offer!

: Marcus Berry makes an under bridge pickup that does a good job of reproducing the sound. I would get an "end pin jack" that replaces the strap button at the lower (south) bout of the guitar. There are several pre-amp units that plug into the jack and the cord plugs into the pre-amp. This would keep the guitar looking original and if you ever wanted to swap it in on another, you could remove the pickup, pre-amp, jack and leave no evidence of alterations to the eye. Then you could use them on the new one. The bridge will need to be cut down on the bottom to make room for the pickup, approx. 1/8th of an inch. If you swap it in later it will need to be replaced, but that is no big job to do.

Dear GuitarMaster, Thought this might interest your newsletter readers: Whilst 12 string guitars have a beautiful sound thay may be difficult to play on some models compared to a standard guitar due to the extra six strings. A compromise is to remove the bottom three octave strings: E A D, to leave nine strings on the guitar. This facilitates easier playing whilst still maintaining a "chiming" sound and a full bass register. Do try it, you might like it. You can read more tips like this at: <a href="http://www.houlston.freeserve.co.uk">www.houlston.freeserve.co.uk</a> Best wishes, Bob

September 14, 2004 at 6:33 am #110633AnonymousGuest
With all respect to Bob, I have to say that the whole thing about the 12 string sound is in the octave pairs. Strung as Bob suggests, you only end up with one octave pair (G). Another common variation is to take off the TOP 3 secondary strings. I like trying all kinds of configurations. Tuning a full tone low ( D G C F A D) is quite common and you can even get an octave on the second course (A) this way. With good picking technique you can hit just the string you want without its pair, and having the lower of each pair on the opposite side to standard gives the bass to the (downstroking) thumb and the treble to the (upstroking) fingers. You need the nut and bridge remodelled of course. Open tunings really rock on 12 strings. Slide on a specially set up 12 is also very cool for pickers. Some have tuned the pairs in fifths and other harmonies, but it’s pretty weird and limiting.

I recently purchased an acoustic guitar: Suzuki to be exact. The price was reasonable, and I have been told the retail value is rather nice. All answers I’ve gotten have been a large amount of bureaucratic, well, you know. If anyone has any information on Suzuki acoustics that I can use, please e-mail me. I am fairly ignorant in the field of guitars.

: Charvel made a Surfcaster Bass from about 1992 to 1994. They were acoustic electric, is yours? There are a couple of others that have the same body style. Post or e-mail me a detailed description of it and I’ll look it up. It’s strange that it don’t have a serial number.

Does anyone have any info on the year and going price for this. I paid $65.00 for it with a tweed case, though it needs a good cleaning and is missing a couple of screws. Just wondered. Thanks

I need to know what kind of guitar would be good to get and what kind of prices im looking at. Um, about 4 months ago I got my first guitar. I got a Samick Malibu. Since there a brand thats not heard of by many people there usually really cheap. And really nice guitars. But there electric. Well some are. Samick also makles acooustic. So.. whcihever you choose. For amps if you choose an electric, i personally like the Roland Microcube. It’s a little bit more, but its got everything. It has about 7 different sounds for different songs. And its got a built in tuner, and runs on batteries, or a cord. Ect… Um… but look around at different stores, try and find the nest deal. Hope I helped a bit. XoXoX

Yamaha make consistently good guitars for beginners. Second hand guitars are often good value, IF you can spot a straight neck and an unwarped top. In learning, be aware that the first steps are the hardest, and don’t assume there is something wrong with you if your fingers just won’t do it straight away. You are looking at at least a year of regular practice before you start getting a good musical return for your effort. ( it’s worth it )

Hi all i’m new to this, have been playing guitar for 13 years and just started playing in open d, i hear alot of celtic tunes use it, i’m celtic myself and want to learn to play that music, i’ve listen to lots of celtic music over the last few days, can figure out rythym, but can’t transcribe fiddle to the guitar scales, can someone help me out, and also is there any popular songs in open d, and can i play in open d the same as in standard tuning , thank you.

September 14, 2004 at 7:21 am #110616AnonymousGuest
I think applying theory to your problem will prove worthwhile, though a bit tedious at first. Learn how to read in open tuning, at least on the first five frets or so. Some tunes will require retuning to Dm ( DADFAD). Ligado ( hammers and pull-offs) proves very handy for speed without stress on the grace notes and fast bits. Most Celtic music can be played against a drone chord, so your thumb is keeping a beat on the low open strings while your fingers pick the melody on the high strings. Drawing up the D scale pattern on a long fretboard diagram for D tuning is really useful. Just work out where the notes from D major ( D E F# G A B C# ) occur along each string. Using this "map" and your ear, you can work out a lot of tunes pretty easily. Do a Google search for celtic "open D" to find heaps of stuff, including lots of tunes in dadgad tuning. ( D sus 4) Your last questiion is a bit confusing, and I’m not sure what you mean. You can play any melody in open tuning, but of course the fingering is different for a different tuning. I have heard some great slide guitar treatments of celtic tunes also. Exploring modes is also useful in open tunings.

-
September 11, 2004 at 9:02 am #81873AnonymousGuest
: Sand it down real good first. You don’t need to remove all the paint, just sand it all over to give the new paint some "fingers" to hold on to. Fill the dents and scratches with wood filler. Stuff the electronics cavities and the neck mortise with a wad of aluminum foil covered in plastic to keep the paint out of them. Buy a good brand of high gloss lacqure paint and a good gravity feed paint gun. Apply about 6-8 thin coats of paint, then 3-4 clear top hard coats and buff it out. If it is an American made guitar I wouldn’t do anything to it personally, as that will ruin any chances it has of becoming a valuable guitar in later years.

I have an American made 1997 Stratocaster. I recently noticed that the edge of the "Skunk Strip" on the back of the neck has raised a little between the 8th and the 12th frets. It is only on one side of the strip. It is very slight but you can feel the edge of the strip when you run your finger over it. There is no seperation between the strip and the neck and it is not cracked. I had it looked by a certified Fender repair tech and he said it was nothing to worry about. If it got worse, Fender would replace the neck under warranty. Has anyone ever experienced this issue with a Fender Strat or Tele?

Hi, I have a 90’s vintage Ibanez EX series guitar that I inherited from a friend. It must have been a cheaper version because it has absolutely horrendous machine heads. (Although it sounds perfectly nice, and I’d like to use it for a while) They are sticky and feel cheap. I’m wondering how tough it would be to just buy some grovers to replace them? Do I need to worry about the hole diameter? Do I need to worry about the screw placement on the back, or do I just tap a new screw hole wherever one is needed? Please advise. Thanks.
-
September 8, 2004 at 4:00 am #110355AnonymousGuest
Just take one off and take it to your friendly guitar shop. You should be able to find a good replacement set. Stay with the same hole diameter, but different screw placement is tolerable if the new holes are not too close to the old ones (which should be filled first; friendly hardware store will advise.) Don’t get too macho when screwing in the new screws.

September 8, 2004 at 3:13 am #81503AnonymousGuest
: Does anyone know how to build an ebow. How does it work? I can’t say how to buid one, but it is basically a fluctuating electro magnet. It involves a coil through which "noise" is being "played" at a high enough level to get the guitar strings moving. The signal in the coil can’t be just a note, or other notes wouldn’t get excited.

You need to learn basic theory and apply it to the neck. It really isn’t too scary. The best place to start is to draw up a neck diagram ( like a long chord diagram ) showing all the notes in C, that is leaving out all sharps and flats. With this diagram in front of you, you can explore the neck and find bits you like to play. Any shapes you find in C will be useable in other keys by just playing them further up or down the neck. This is just a starting point for you. To draw up this diagram string by string, just remember that it is 2 frets from note to note except in the case of E to F and B to C where there is only a 1 fret difference. Along the E string for example, you will put a dot on the following frets; 0 1 3 5 7 8 10 12 13 15 0 1 is the E F semitone 7 8 is the B C semitone. all the other jumps are full tones. I hope this helps. Also there are books of scales and licks written in tab.

If you could get hold of something like a Yamaha QY10 ( which is an old model, therefore not too expensive on ebay ) I think it would be excellent for you. You could quickly set up chord progressions and just play over drum and bass. Even a cheap old drum machine would be very helpful. There are also lots of virtual drum machines etc. for computer.

I have one similar, a 64 model with some modifications. I bought it for $350 including a case back in 1992. I still see them for prices ranging from 300 – $750 depending upon condition, etc. The more original, the higher the price. Check Ebay for a good idea.

Ebay will give you an idea of what you can sell it there but they do not represent the value of anything. Alot of price fixing and rip-off artists. Take it to a guitar show, antique guitar dealer, etc. Sure you can go to Ebay but Ebay doesn’t represent the collector community nor will it ever set the value of anything since most buyers do not really know what they are buying unless they are experts themselves. Alot of scams and made up stories so they are not a reliable place to value anything. They set up false buyers, feedback, etc. to create a false market at times. Some rip offs even conspire together to manipulate ebay market values in order to inflate the values of items. Ebay is not a reliable place to sell or buy unless it isn’t a true collector piece. A very few sell top notch collector’s items there. There may be a few but if you buy or sell in person you will always know what’s up if you do your homework. : I have one similar, a 64 model with some modifications. I think Yamaha make the best beginners instruments. I really don’t think much of the brands you mentioned, and they are harder to resell when the time comes. Get a second hand guitar that you can later resell for about the same price when you are ready to upgrade. Are you talking acoustic?

Heard of diastone? diddnt think so, if you can ly your hands on one then go for it! Personally i think that you can beat their sound. The Diastone company went silverside up in the early 80’s so the guitars are becoming more sought after, i have a Diastone acoustic 12-string and its parralell to any more known names, if you own a Diastone and are selling i advise you not to sell for less than 200 squid as they will became very collectable very quickly as the company was (apparently) only in buisness for 3 years. I’m failry new to this electrified guitar business and recently bought a Vintage Les Paul Special (made by vintage, not the original 1959 – I’m not that rich) and a Roland Cube 30. Both sound great but I had a real problem with intermittent buzzing through the amp. This got very loud but went away if I touched any metal part of the guitar. Whenever I took them back to the shop they both sounded fine. I did manage to get some popping on another amp and the shop completely re-wired my guitar for me (all new apart from the pickups) free of charge. I got it back and it sounded great….until…..the buzz came back. I found out what was causing it…….it’s the blasted dimmer switches in my house!!!! (a little embarrasing) I turn the lights on and it’s buzz city. Turn them off and everything sounds great again. Should the amp be that sensative? Is this a problem with the amp or do I need to re-wire my house (or just play in the dark)? Seriously, should the amp be that sensative? If not I’ll take it back and get another (same amp, because it’s fantastic) or is there any way I can ground the amp better?

We had the same type of problem where we practiced. When the AC/Heating unit would come on everything we had buzzed. The electrical outlets of the room we was in were not grounded. So, I bought a grounding rod from a hardware store and drove it in the ground outside the window. Then I got all new recepticals for the wall outlets and enough 12 gage soild wire to go from one plug to the other. I ran the wire from plug to plug along the base boards and trim. At the plug next to the window I drilled through the edge of the window sill and ran it to the grounding rod outside whitch grounded all the plugs in the room. This was a great improvement, however, there was still some interference at times. We noticed that when my brother, the bass player, would turn just right it would quit and if he turned the other way it would increase. I bought a shielding kit for his bass and installed it and that took care of the buzz problem completly. If you know the ground is good in your room you may need to shield your guitar. The kits are not expensive and easy to do. : I’m failry new to this electrified guitar business and recently bought a Vintage Les Paul Special (made by vintage, not the original 1959 – I’m not that rich) and a Roland Cube 30. You might also try using Beldon sheilded cords for your guitar, they are slightly more expensive but work well. Another reason may be fluorescent lights, the ballast in some fluorescent lights creates buzzing. Last, there can also be some feedback occurring through the guitar and bass pickups. As you mentioned the wiring and the potentiometers on dimmers switches don’t help.

I noticed in the manual it actually says dont use on the same circuit as "vairable lighting". I borrowed a marshall amp and a washburn guitar and it did the sasme thing so it’s definately the electrics in my house rather than the amp. Will a shielded lead actually stop this as it sounds like the interferance is coming through the power lead of the amp.

: They suggested looking on the internet for advice on shielding the guitar. :Shielding a guitar is very simple to do and the kits are relativly cheap. I belive I can walk you through it no problem. All the guitars I own are shielded and grounded (earthed). Guess I helped the makers of the kits earn a few buck…..lol. It’s easy, really.
-
September 11, 2004 at 2:42 am #123360AnonymousGuest
Can you suggest where to get the shielding kits from? I’ve looked (admittedly not very hard) and haven’t seen any. I noticed the evening that I can actually get it to buzz without even having the guitar attached. If I turn on the amp without plugging in the guitar and then hold the lead anywhere near a light or a dimmer switch (within about 3 ft) I can get it to buzz quite loudly.

September 8, 2004 at 1:46 am #123280AnonymousGuest
:Probably not, what you are more than likly hearing is called AC line noise and is usually caused by a faulty ground or earthing in the electrical wiring. Here is a simple test: If your amp has a three prong plug on it and the wall outlet is only a two prong type, then you need an adapter to plug it up, right? Ok on most adapters there is a metal loop or a wire with a metal clip on it, take a long enough wire to go from the wall outlet to a gas pipe or a water pipe, tie the wire tight to the pipe (a hose clamp or vicegrips is good here) and tie the other end to the plug adapter loop or wire. Pipes usually go into the ground at some point and this will make a temporary groung for the test. If the wall outlet is a three prong type and not grounded, connect the wire to the green screw on the back of the outlet. You will need to take the plug outlet out of the wall to do this, so be sure to turn off the electricity to that plug before removing the screws that hold it in the wall. If at all possible try to plug the amp into an outlet that is not on the same circuit as the lights, this is a problem with that kind of lighting. If you want to e-mail me I will explain in more detail how you can ground a few plugs and save some money on doing the whole house. [email protected] I noticed in the manual it actually says dont use on the same circuit as "vairable lighting". I live in the UK, we only have 3 pin plugs and 3 pin sockets. everything has to be earched by law (nanny state and all that). I phoned Roland UK today and they said it’ll always happen if I have dimmer switches. They suggested looking on the internet for advice on shielding the guitar. I also phoned a large music store in Portsmouth and when I explained the symptoms, the first thing he asked was if I had dimmer switches in the room. All he could suggest was getting a lamp! Oh well……

Many players over pay for quality guitars. There are small shops in the United States which are happy to create instruments of high quailty with great value points. Of course, Falk Guitars is one of them. See falk guitars in the GuitarSite.com Makers Database. Manufactured guitars are a general compromise between the practicality of production techinques and profit. Contrast that with the attention of quaility found in the handmade guitars and you will hear and feel the difference. More time and attention to the sound board produces better dynamics and greater playability.

That’s good. I’m happy to see other players that hold this value. I suppose the cost of the guitar was much less than that of the Martin. Other players need to get the word about quality privately made brands to help support the McKnights and Falks of the world. That’s for the comments. Dave : I agree. Despite playing a long time, I’m unable to master the various techniques for getting really nice vibrato. Any advice? Is there anywhere on the web with good advice on this?
-
September 8, 2004 at 4:20 am #110363AnonymousGuest
Using too much pressure to fret the note will make it difficult to get good vibrato. The position of the left hand thumb is also important in providing a pivot point.
-
September 4, 2004 at 4:59 pm #81223AnonymousGuest
A nice vibrato starts in the wrist. Some guys tend to push the string up and down using their elbow.Thats O.K…but I’ve found that by twisting your wrist left to right is much more expressive.I call it a waggle. For deeper vibratos I just hold the note and pull the string DOWN/UP. Don’t rely on your bicepts…it’s way too stiff. It’s difficult to verbaly describe the technique.Get some film footage on B.B. King or Albert Collins.B.B.’s soulful vibrato is what made him famous in the world of blues-men! Hope this helps

what is the difference between strats and telecasters?
-
September 3, 2004 at 4:29 am #81105AnonymousGuest
Telecasters are more of a country guitar as they have a cleaner sound and Strats are more for rock. This is not definite though, it depends on the personal choice of the player. : what is the difference between strats and telecasters?
-
September 4, 2004 at 3:19 am #81218AnonymousGuest
wouldnt you say the strat is better for the softer side of rock? certainly a great blues guitar, and it too has its place in country sound, same goes for the telecaster, they both have their unmistakable sound and qualities, but hard rock/ heavy rock? surely thats where the Gibson comes in, humbucker pick ups driving a valve amp, thats heavy/hard rock.
-
September 4, 2004 at 8:08 am #110353AnonymousGuest
:Yes, I would and I agree, but to a point though. When invited to play with a band, I ask for a copy of the set list they will be using and what their guitarist will be playing. If it’s for hire at a studio, I ask for a little back ground info on the type of music to be played, what guitars are being used and the person I’m playing for. Then I will select the guitars to take with me. This way my sound can be distinguished from the others and I’ll have a better idea of what is expected of me. You are right, Gibson’s are great guitars for heavy/hard rock, I have several. Personally, I don’t want to sound just like the other guitarist, or any other guitarist for that matter. Nor do I want to sound better than any of them. I only want to lend my ability, style and sound to what’s being played for the sake of the music. Besides, it’s all about the music, so diversity and the ability to adapt to what’s needed is paramount. wouldnt you say the strat is better for the softer side of rock? certainly a great blues guitar, and it too has its place in country sound, same goes for the telecaster, they both have their unmistakable sound and qualities, but hard rock/ heavy rock? surely thats where the Gibson comes in, humbucker pick ups driving a valve amp, thats heavy/hard rock.

pookster, which one do you prefer? : : what is the difference between strats and telecasters?
-
September 3, 2004 at 11:38 pm #110340AnonymousGuest
That depends on what I’m going to play. If it is a straight up country sound, the Telecaster. If it is a soft-medium rock sound I may use either, the mood of the song and chords used would decide which. Hard rock or metal, the Strat. I have one of each and use both, again depending on the venue I’m playing. Some times the Tele delivers what I’m looking for even though the sound is hard rock because of it’s tonal qualities and vice-versa. I have done a lot of tweaking to them so they will perform to my needs. : pookster, which one do you prefer? : : : what is the difference between strats and telecasters?

Possible solutions: Make sure your power supply is regulated ( I don’t know about signalflex ) and provides enough amperage. Total up the amperage of the pedals and compare with the power adaptor rating. Make up a patch lead that has the earth disconnected at one of the plugs, and try it on the input or output of the yngwie. Too many earth points cause an "earth loop" which acts like an aerial picking up interference from transformers etc. Have your power supply (and amp) at a distance from the pedals, and don’t run mains power leads near signal leads. Use high quality leads. Most distortion pedals are noisy, and compression makes it worse. If it’s just as noisy running on batteries, the problem is harder to fix. A good techie can quieten some pedals down by upgrading the capacitors. If the noise is in the pedals themselves it usually wouldn’t sound like hum, more like surf. Pedals sure can screw your amp tone. You might consider having true bypass mods done on the pedals.

Somewhere along in 1953, when solid body guitars began, Gibson started to ink-stamp the ID numbers on the back of the headstock. They were 5 or 6 digit numbers and the first number designates the last digit of the year it was made. The rest of the numbers are production numbers and run in consecutive order. They used this system until 1961. The number you list is, 0 7774. This would mean it was made in 1960 and was the 7,774th one in production. : HI CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YEAR THIS LES PAUL JUNIOR I HAVE IS..SERIAL NUMBER..0 7774…IT WAS GIVEN TO ME BY MY SISTER IT BELONGED TO MY LATE BROTHER IN LAW HE WAS THE ORIGINAL OWNER…MY SISTER TOLD ME IT WAS A 1959..BUT IM NOT SURE..IF YOU CAN HELP ME I WOULD BE GREATFUL…THANK YOU

My grandfather left me a guitar when he passed it is a Gibson ES300 it has a # A-5080 inside it has been sitting in my bedroom for years it has a few cigerette burns (pap liked to smoke while he played) I have never gotten around to learning to play and I am now 38 and don’t figure I ever will. Can anyone tell me how much it might be worth? I realize I would probably have to take it to a dealer in person to get an exact figure but was just trying to get an idea. Thanks
