Your Strat is one of the unrecognized great ones from Fender and the much talked-about, hero Pres. Dan Smith. Dan's still around hangin' out with the Hellecasters. Until people catch on to how excellent the 84's, 86 and 87 US models are, they are paying only around $700 because of a psychological barrier. Many buyers of "used and not quite vintage" Strats do not want to cross the threshold of the price of a new one, at $799. Also, Fender had a $100 rebate program on the new models this year.

Strat Year?

Anybody got any info on SN# S970740 Strat? It's in excellent condition, & I got it for $250 about 5 years ago, & it sure plays good, what ever it is. Is it worth anthing? Its got a really hot pickup in the bridge posistion though. Its almost to much treble for me. Is that one of those X1 pickups?

It is a 1979 model, could easily have been made in 1980. If it's not the 25th anniversay model, it's a standard, identifiable by large headstock, bullet truss rod, 3 bolt micro-adjust neck plate. There's a high probability that it has black plastic parts, instead of white. And some very real possibility that you got an 1980 X1 bridge if the guitar was assembled when they were available. Also of note, cool ash body. It's a heavy ash though. Next generation switched to alder. They sell for around US $700. Always get another opinion, if it's an opinion.

Thanks Gretchen, Your right about the very heavy natural ash wood body, Bullet truss rod, & a 3 bolt micro-adjust neck plate. It has a white face plate & black plastic pickups & controls & like i said , its bridge pickup is all about treble! Also NO wammy bar! But whats the distinction that would make it a 25th anniversay model? The only two things I don't like about it is the pickup & no wammy bar like my 59 Strat has. This might date me a bit but I payed $239 for my 59 when I bought it new back then. Started playing Oct 18th, 1957, on my 7th birthday! I traded in my single pickup 57 Rickenbacker for it & got $75 trade in for it! Thanks for your time! Keith

You're most welcome. That's an interesting history you have there. I wish we had 1957 Strats, Rickenbackers and 59 Les Pauls to sell at today's prices.

The 25th Anniversary model Strat (1954-79) of 1979 and 1980 is distinctive, because they are silver, with black trim, and have a 4 bolt neck plate, deluxe Sperzel tuning keys, a 6 digit serial # beginning with 25, commemorative neckplate stamp and black lettering on the upper horn or the body.

Originally released in white pearl, a Huffy bicycle colour, there were immediate problems with paint cracking and peeling. 500 were prodiced in white, those that were not sold were recalled & refinned in Porsche silver. A total of 10,000 were made.

Hey Nathan,

I have a 70's Ventura catalog posted on my website VintAxe.com that I think has your guitar in it. It's probably worth somewhere in the $250-$350 range depending on condition. Steve

Question about shipping a guitar

What's the best way to ship a guitar? I have one with a case, and am not sure how to ship it. I fear the neck isn't properly embraced by the case, and the body has a bit of wiggle room that I can't seem to fix up.

Re: Question about shipping a guitar

stuff the gapps with crushed up paper, cable tie the whole case shut, you could put it into a cardboard box if you wanted to protect the case, but that seems a little extreme.

Stratstyle esp?

I'm just in the middle of buying my first elect guitar.. i have a friend that can hook em up with a esp stratstyle for $300 Canadian. Black lead guitar, locking lead, tremolo system, floating bridge, can anyone tell me if its a fair deal or if i'd be better off finding something else? thnx a lot...

Re: Stratstyle esp?

ESP vintage 100,200,300,400's and Vintage plus' are probably one of their best strat style guitars, they give a nice jazzy tone clean and give a decent hard rock, metal tone. With EMG's installed however, they are the perfect lead guitar. I am still on the search for one i myself can purchase and have found a few on ebay. Take a look and see if you like them. Personally i give the guitars a 9 out of 10 just because the body looks just like a fenders, otherwise all ive got is good reviews for it. Good Luck. Trevor

Acoustic guitar masters

I am booking several critically acclaimed acoustic guitarists and am open to suggestions as to new venues to pursue throughout the U.S.A. and overseas. They are flexibile in terms of where they play, but probably 100-300 seats or festivals are best at present since we are involved in some audience building at this time.

They are primarily instrumentalists, though a couple of them do sing.

I've found to date that a number of venues are reluctant to book them, not because they aren't world class musicians, but because they are afraid solo guitar music is somewhat "esoteric." I find that once we get our foot in the door, the music does the talking from there and the audiences are delighted they attended the concerts.

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

guitar beginers

Hey! Can somebody help me? I'm going to be playing guitar soon and i need tips.
Thanks!
-Lizzie

Re: guitar beginers

nylon string classical/spanish guitar is easier on the fingers and has a wider neck and wider string spacings,
so you can move your fingers easier, learn some good theory, but also learn a tune you like, if you have a favorite song by an artist you like try to learn the song, and most of all you need to keep up the practice, if you get stuck on anything post your question on here.

Good luck

Re: guitar beginers

I agree with Lee, & I think the key word is Practice, Practice, Practice! Another good word is Persistance! DON'T GIVE UP! WORK on that favorite song of yours, As well & your scales & riffs & cord progressions. & ask help wherever you can find it, but DON'T GIVE UP! And eventually that favorite song of yours WILL start sounding beter & beter & it will be getting easier & easier to play also! Then the next song will be a littler easier to learn also, but it's the same thing over & over. Practice at lease 1 hour a day, EVERY DAY & be PERSISTANT! & ENJOY! Try some E A & B cord combinations, & some C F & G cord combinations, & then think about them, it's the same thing, only a different key. Then think, there are a lot of different keys, so try it in ALL of them! Recognize the progression, its a common one in a lot of old rock songs, same cords in different keys with different beats & tempos. Also try and make your cords sound clear, no FAT FINGERING, that's sloppy! Every note that is played in the cord should ring CLEAR! And practice changing cords quickly, but ALLWAYS CLEARLY! GOOD LUCK & Have FUN & ENJOY! PERSISTANTLY! Keith

Help Me! I'm a beginer!

Can someone give me tips on how to play the guitar!?
Thanks in advance!
- Lizzie

Re: Help Me! I'm a beginer!

hey! a gd way to start is to get a beginners guitar book, try and get lessons too. If u have a gd guitar teacher it helps:-) Practice makes perfect... it takes time to be a gd guitarist ive been at it for only 2 years but im in a band and we tour so its gd. It depends what music u want to play. When i started out i mainly played punk-rock, you should try to get tabs for blink 182 (all the small things) or smells like teen spirit(which i know isnt punk rock its grunge but its still an easy song to learn). Start with the basics, dont jump into things. Learn the common cords, power cords and barre cords are the bulk of most rythem guitar playing... start out slow and remeber to practice. Try and practice every day even if its only for 10 or 15 mins. If u want any more help feel free to email me at: winters_heart100@hotmail.com
