: Thanks Phil. That clears it up. I'm a little behind the times on guitar pick-ups and switches. The last guitar I bought was a 1952 arch-top Gibson with only volume and tone controls. My wife just bought me a new ovation, and since I am no longer a working musician and don't need the amplification, I didn't even check out the purpose of the battery and the sophisticated pick-up.
