guitar->mic input=unwanted distortion. solution?

My laptop has a microphone input, but no line input. If I plug my guitar directly into it, I get distortion no matter how low I set the input level for the mic in Windows' mixer. Is this caused by an impedence mismatch? Any ideas on what I would need to put inline so I could record it "clean"? Preferably something cheap I could build with a few parts from Radio Shack.
