Restringing an Acoustic

I have an Epiphone AJ-18 Acoustic. Damn good guitar for the price. Anyway, I bought some Martin strings yesterday and attempted to restring them today. Theres a problem, though. The ball end of the string wont fit through the hole on the bridge. Do I just need to get different strings or am I doing something wrong?
