Bass guitar pickup not working

I have a Maton acoustic/electric bass guitar. The pickup does not now work and I can't find out the reason (even from Maton). There doesn't appear to be a battery anywhere on the cable from the pickup to the plug connection that I can see.
Can someone please offer any suggestions. Thanks
