The book recommendation is easy, but I'm a little biased. I wrote a book with my teacher -- ROCKIN' JIMMY'S DAILY GUITAR WORKOUT -- that should get you on the right track, Rockin' Jimmy's Daily Guitar Workout. It's available through www.amazon.com and J.K. Lutherie www.jklutherie.com.
I also have a list of other great books. Check out my web site -- the specific page is http://www.rathmanncomm.com/Page_18x.html -- and it includes links to the books on amazon.com.
Your choice of guitar is a tough one. Find something that reproduces the sounds you like, and is made in the United States. A used American guitar, if you make the best deal you can with a store or private party, will not lose value over the years. Whether you sell it later or leave it to your kids, it's the "soundest" choice.
Please let me know if I can be of any other assistance.
Sincerely,
Charles Rathmann
