: Why is an accoustic guitar shaped like an hourglass and how does it effect the sound?
The shape is for comfort, but also influences the sound. In general, larger bodies tend to be louder and have more bass. The shape of the body influences how the wood vibrates, which has a lot to do with why certian body styles have charecteristic sounds, for example the booming bass of a dreadnaught. There are many other variables that affect the sound, including materials, construction, strings, finish, etc., but probably the single most important is the player!
