First i don't think you need lessions, any one can become good, its just practicing and sticking to it..
I would suggest that you try some books/videos, or just try doing some easy tabs,to get started of well.. lessions are sometime tedious,But if you wanna go that way its fine.
And about guitar, since its only been 5 months try and buy something under 3 or 4 hundred bucks..
I would say a fender..But try it out first to see how it sounds to you, and if your comfortable with it...
