What the other individuals have brought to the table is very good. I would take the manufacturer's information on placement and devide it by three. Only remove about 2/3 thirds of the wood they say to remove. Then widdle and place the nut until the intonation is correct. This will make a crappy guitar that much better. By the way set the intonation as correctly as possible BEFORE doing any handy-work. The theory is that the instrument sounds realitvly good as is and needs minor adjutment. As with the other posts, DO NOT HURRY THE PROCESS, you should take baby steps in making any instrument sound good. You can't build a "Strovarious" in a minute, but a shit-pile in a second!
