hollow bodies & sustain...?

I've read that real hollow bodies (like epiphone casino) lack sustain . On the other hand they feedback quite easily. So can't you set for a mild overdrive and let your notes' coda fall into feedback when you need an extra-long note?I've heard this in many pros recordings - i.e. think of slash , or grateful dead's first acid-rock period or some srv - sing both solid and hollow bodies I think. Is it easy to control that situation with that kind of guitar?
