: First off don't buy anything except a fender strat. If you can't afford a U.S.A. model get a mexican one. Don't buy a squire anything!!! You can get a used mex for about $200-300. DON'T CHEAP OUT!!! Your first amp can be just about anything but again you eventually want to move to a tube amp. Preferably Fender. A fender champ is a good starting amp. Finally buy one of those zoom effect boxes and take some lessons. Did you hear me? I said take some lessons. One more time...repeat after me...take some lessons. You'll never regret it. And finally finally...practice till your room mates want you out and your breathing through your eyes...rock on young soldier!
Flix's last post is right: don't be so obsessed by the name on the headstock; go into music stores (maybe even take along a friend who can play), and try out what's in your price range. The advantage to buying a guitar with a recognized brand name like Fender (and this includes Squier, which can be very good guitars!) is that if you decide to sell it, you'll get a better resale than on a no-name guitar.
