Hi, i have both a Epiphone les paul standard and mexican fender strat with a maple neck and i find both to be very good indeed, the les paul is more for the bluesy solos(very good indded for those) and the fender for anything, if you decide to go for an epi then settle for nothing less than a epi les paul standard(top of the range, epi)because the fender will simply slaughter anything lower and personally they're both equal from my piont of view
