5th/ 7th position (I don't understand, need help!)

I hear people saying that for example, if I'm playing in E, I was playing the lead in 3rd, 5th, or 7th, position, I'm confused on this, and if I move to these positions, do I need to flat or sharp certain notes at that position. Also if I play the same notes as the root note position as I do in the say 7th, won't I get the same sound, or is it that you would land on different root notes for these positions?
PLEASE HELP< TOTALLY CONFUSED!!!
