: I've been playing the acoustic for a while now and am thinking of upgrading to an electric, am thinking of getting an Epiphone Special II, a Peavey Rage 158 amp and a Zoom 505 II effect box, any advice on these models of gear for a beginner electric guitarist. Also the guitar dosen't come with a wammy bar, how important is that?

From my experience Epiphone makes nice entry level guitars. I used to have one and it did quite well for about two years. Then I wanted another one with better electronics, better string action, and a more comfortable neck. Play every guitar you can get your hands on before you decide on one.

I used to have a peavey amp and I always hated it. The small peaveys have NO TONE, from what I've seen. Once you decide on the guitar you want, plug it into every amp you can to see which one sounds best. Be objective and don't get in a hurry. Remember if you shop around for a month or two, the Christmas sales will begin and you will be able to save a few dollars.

As far as the Zoom goes, I would never buy another plastic effect. The Zoom effects are CHEAP. The more effects they put in a cheap processor the worse they are going to sound. Once again, find the guitar you want, then the amp that sounds good, then start trying to find effects that compliment your new gear.

I also make sure that whenever I buy gear the shop will let me return it if I don't like it in a few days.
Your new gear will sound different when you get it hame and play it for a week.

Oh yea, the whammy bar is totally unimportant for a beginner. I played guitar for 10 years before I got one and I still rarely use it. I hope this helps.

Good luuck and remember, DON'T GET IN A HURRY, TAKE THE TIME TO SEE WHATS OUT THERE BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING!!!
