there are lots of different amps out there for great metal tones:
Zakk wydle uses jcm800s with distorsion pedals (his heads are modified to his tastes!)
Dino Cazarez from fear factory also uses a modified jcm800
EVH used a modified jcm800 on eruption and such, he now uses a 5150 which is also an awesome amp! (def check it out!)
Anthrax used jcm800s however they use jcm2000 dsls and randall now
DimeBag uses randall amps, along with furman parametric equalizers, a graphic eq, and a distorsion pedal (mtx double shot or dd-11) to further push the amp
Godsmack uses mesa rectifers
Sevendust uses randall and mesa
Metallica use to use jcm800 (modified) the now use mesa preamps, rectifers, ada mp-1 (check it out!!)
The best bet is to get an amp modified(or built) to your tastes http://www.voodooamps.com the guy named Trace modifies amps to your tastes! most any amp too! he'll build you one, or modify yours, or you can buy modified amps! hes located in NY but you can contact him, tell him what you want done, what sounds you are going for, and he'll do it for you! and its a lot cheaper than a high end amp (IE soldano, vht, bogner, diesel) which are awesome amps but very pricy!
