It was Les Paul the jazz musician who first invented the solid body electric guitar, with his 'Log'. This was a block of pine with some pickups attached, a gibson neck, and some Epiphone guitar sides stuck on for aesthetic reasons. He invented this in around 1939. He took it to Gibson, and they laughed at him. Then Leo Fender had huge commercial success with his 'Broadcaster' (Later Telecaster), and Gibson got in contact with Les to look at his log again. He helped design the Gibson Les Paul model, which was released in 1952.

There you go!!
