: I love that tone that the band gets on all of their albums but especially on that one. I want to start a band that has that kind of guitar tone. Sweet solos and rythm. Please help, so far all I have is a fender reissue twin reverb and an original mesa boogie mark 1.I also have a handful of pedals. Should I mess around with rack effects or processors? I reall y want that vintage tone so Im imagining Ill have to stay away from digital gear. I gues Im going through that phase every guitar player goes though for their search for tone. Im just straight out confused about where to start. Would really apreciate the help, thanx. Will
Not sure, except to say that processors are almost certainly out. I think they plugged straight into amps, in the old fashioned style. They probably got most of the tone by playing the amps way up, to drive the output valves rather than use the master volume circuitry to get the overdriven tone. I would have thought they'd have used Marshalls, but I don't know for sure. Also bear in mind there's at least one guitar there playing open-tuned - probably open G - the way the Stones played in the early 70s. For what its worth, though, I heard the following story a while ago. There was a guy who was a great fan of an English guitarist by the name of Hank Marvin. Hank had a very distinctive tone which some people love and others don't. I'm in the latter category which is irrelevant but I need my credibility intact. Anywya this fan struggled for ages to get Hank's tone, buying loads of gear and everything. Finally he was lucky enough to meet Hank at a gig, and noted down the exact settings of all Hank's gear so he could recreate it at home. Result - he sounded still sounded like himself. Each to their own, but I'd suggest you get close and then do your own thing from there.
