No, it will not play by itself. The head is just the amplifier. It requires a speaker cabinet to transform the amplified guitar signal into audible sound. On a combo amp, the amplifier and speaker are in one box,"combination of amp and speaker". An amp head is only a detatched part of a combo amp.
