for the late 80's metallica sound you will need to find an old mesa BOOGIE mark 3 or 4 (a boogie studio 50 would work also), or use a Boss hm2 heavy metal peddle (not metal zone) if you can find one. i know this is totally what you said you didnt want but that will get you where you want. a marshall 800 would be the closest down the line and the other amps wont come close. also know if you cut your mids that the drums will eat your sound up, metallica used to put like 4 tracks of clean guitar to cut through the mix
