No, they are not hard to use at all. You just have to get used to them. Yes, you must use the pedal to get the wah effect. By rocking the pedal you get the wah-wah sound. With your heel down the guitars low frequencies are emphasized, with your toe down the high frequencies are emphasized. Also, if you want to obtain a constant wah tone you can activate the pedal and leave it in any position and that tone will remain constant. That is very useful for getting a cool mid-rangy nasal tone to give some character to your solo's. As a side note, MXR (I believe it's MXR), makes an effect pedal that does that very thing. Instead of a wah pedal, it is a stompbox that has a couple of tone knobs that you set to emphasize a certain frequency, very cool. Anyway, I hope this helps.
