Hi once again fellow guitar buff. I missed last week due to an overloaded plate, but I’m back this week for you with yet another finger style lesson. I chose that huge hit for the Righteous Brothers “Unchained Melody’ … I figure everyone has heard that beautiful piece before. The tune is a great example of how the related chords from the key all work together. Each is its own environment within the key, its own color, its own function. Each provides the platform for the melody to keeping doing the right thing … No ‘outside’ chord comes into it, nor is any required.

Go to the Guitar for Beginners and Beyond home page and follow the Weekly Lesson link. Viewing the movie requires a couple of seconds of your time, but I’m sure you won’t mind for these free lessons.

PlaneTalk – The Truly Totally Different Guitar Instruction Book continues to enlighten. Here is the latest feedback, from T.K. in Missouri:

“Kirk: A quick note for what it’s worth. I purchased your book/slide rule a few months back. I cannot believe it but I did not have time to pick it up until last week. Your technique is amazing!! In just 4-5 days, I am seeing the fretboard in a whole new totally different way … Wow!!! Great job. I can’t wait for the DVD. I think this may be one of the last “theory” books I need to buy. … I cannot believe the progress I’ve made. Brilliant and Genius if I may say.”

Yes! You may say. If you’re wondering how to turn the whole fretboard into familiar friendly territory, how to hear the note before you play it, how to create melody on the fly, then drop in to the site and find out more about it. There are many free movie/tab/midi lessons there too.

Check out the new finger style ‘Master Lesson’ I’ve put together for that great jazz/blues tune Stormy Weather. It’s a fun one to wrap your fingers around. The finished product is a downloadable zip file containing the movie, which is crystal clear, the tab, the midi, the Mp3 and commentary explaining the whole thing. A steal for 10 bucks.

I’ve loaded up my tribute to the late, great Ray Charles at my Soundclick page. Have a listen here. It’s my old 1951 Gibson J-50 playing the rhythm and my Michael Palm resonator for the slide melody.

OK, that’s it for this week, see you next.
