Good essentials

I've been to several forums and review sites but all I can find are reviews of the more high-tech equipment.

Basically, I've got some b'day money and decided I need all the essential bits; leads, straps and the like but I have no idea what I'm looking for. Should I just buy the most expensive lead I can afford or are there certain things to look out for? A mate of mine used to make up his own, is this worth while? Recomendations or buying advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Fiddled with your hyphens? "How very dare you" I'm not the sort of mod who'd edit a contributor's post just to gain a cheap laugh (eh, Lee? The eggs have landed? )

With the SS strings on the Aria, I got a very JJ Brunel sound which I was overly fond of. Everyone was happy enough in my old band (or, at least, I seemed to exert immense influence) but my current guitarist hated it and the drummer found it all pretty amusing. I remember we were doing a gig with an interval DJ and, when he played "Grip", they were all pointy-finger-laugh-at-1BL.

Like you say, the nickels are better all-rounders as I can still get that offensive blat. I had an idea for a chorusy part that was a bit thrashy so I gung-ho'd it like in the old days. The new singer, who'd never been around in my Aria days (and a decent bass player himself) looked aghast while the others fell about.

You have a very long memory, bet you do well at Simon Says.
