This month we take a closer look at the guitar style of Blues legend
Stevie Ray Vaughan. As you read in the “History of SRV” lesson he won
nearly every Blues award and he´s a legend in the tradition of Jimi
Hendrix. His guitar style and equipment was very much inspired by Jimi
Hendrix as well.

Guitars: Of course a lot old Fender Straocasters with rosewood
fretboards. Today there is a SRV tribute Stratocaster with “Texas
Special Pickups” for a rougher sound.

Strings: He always used the heaviest one he could find. He also used
bass strings as well for his full sound. But you´d need strong fingers
to do this as well. He used strings from 0.13 thickness.

Amps: He used a lot of them like Fender Super Reverbs, Fender Vibrolux,
Fender Bassman amps.

Effects: Like Jimi Hendrix he used Ibanez Tubescreamers and Vox Wah
Wah, Univox Uni-Vibe pedals.

Playing style: There are two main characteristics in his guitar play.
One of them is quiete easy. SRV is just using the standard minor-
pentatonic. So you don´t have to learn strange scales. But he could
play it with his unique guitar skills. So, don´t sweat if you can´t
play as fast as SRV himself! 😉 The other main characteristic is his
shuffle play. This is a little bit difficult to learn.

Downstrokes: He mutes the strings with his palm and only the string he
plays sounds. Upstrokes: And with an upstroke he mutes the strings
again.
