Guitar and Pickup combination

Hi All,

I have an SG and a Marshall AVT100 combo tube amp. I am looking for the best combination of Humbucker pickups to create the thickest distorted sound possible! if you have any ideas or you have got this sound yourself I would love to know, as there are so many possibilities and no way to really test them before I spend the money and mutilate my guitar!

Many thanks,

Changing pickups shouldn't require a mutilation job.

If you don't like the new pickups you can always change them back.

id say emg 81 for bridge and emg 60 for neck. that'll give u mean distortion. the 81 is kinda trebbly (get a graphic equalizer). the 85 is good, more of a neck PU, but would prob be pretty ballsy in the bridge.

EMGs are OK for processed sounds but not if you want to plug straight in, with no effects, and drive an amp.

I would say go with what you already have, is there any thicker sound than an SG on the neck pickup?

I Suppose the Gibson SG already has a monster sound, The bridge pick up is rather meaty anyway. And The EMGs , as stated above, are good processors but I just want to drive the amp. Not to keen on using many effects as I enjoy the sound a good amp can create.

Maybe I will rethink the Pickup change and go for a different amp. A Mesa? could do!

Cheers to all who posted.

Yeah, perhaps you should go test drive a few amps!

there are heaps of great pickups around that will do the job for you

seymour duncan, di marzio etc

i use:
bridge bill lawrence XL500L
neck bill lawrence XL500R

changing pickups is a great way to change your tone
