Should’ve read the biog, Tim. Eric teaches in Bielefeld, the town of my mate Arni who runs http://www.leftybass.com. I have a video loading problem at the mo, so I can’t comment on his playing. If I could talk to Eric, though, I’d suggest he ditch that “hair over face” Mustaine pose and the ‘taph “instrumental rock from the heart” as both are dreadful cliches. As soon as I can get a listen in, I shall do.

Whilst not being my thing ‘Canyon of Spirits’ is nice, very melodic for the style. I own some Vai/Sach/Malmstein and it gets a bit “yeah, whatever” after a while but this is quite sweet.

Is he German then?

Did you enjoy the part 1?

I remember the period (after Let’s Dance). Bowie approached Thomas Dolby and asked him to work with him. In the words of Bowie’s (disarmingly honest) press at the time, “Mr Bowie hasn’t had a hit in a while”.

BTW, the Bernie story intrigued me so I had a rummage. He played on “Without You”, which is not one of the better-known tracks off the album. Interestingly, I read that a lot of the guitar was done by a young Stevie Ray Vaughan:

Never knew that.

Yeah, everyone avoided the poking of this particular stick. Hence me confessing, for I have no shame, obviously…

And I was talking about Bowie’s epic career. I just wish he hadn’t been introduced to anything electronic…3 albums later: I’ll twist this knob and make another album…and we own them all!!! Rock and Roll Suicide was the apex as far as I’m concerned.
Can’t say anything negative about Bowie or the missus will slap me but the songs you mentioned were IMhumbleO possibly the lowest ebb of his epic career, so yeah, quite possibly.
Who’s? Bowies or Bernies? or both?
And i avoided the pokes with the stick, i might not play much Bass, but i know a good Bass player when i hear one.

Yeah, ok, Bernie can play.

I just like poking people with my metophorical stick and seeing if they bite. It’s a sick, sick hobby of mine…

Poke, poke and indeed poke again…

BTW, Bernie Edwards, and Good Times in particular, defines proper funk bass. I meant to put that one in the fave bass riffs thread. If you watch him playing (or indeed listen), his thumb stays well away from the strings. I don’t object to a bit of thumb per se, but it just doesn’t feature in the track. Bernie had the annoying habit of making rather tricky passing runs and quick bends look effortless.

Now, it’s true; I can’t play it. But, I can’t hang Rowenta irons from my nipples like some guys can on stage. And I don’t want to. Painful and pointless.
😆 Classic

Back to the German, I actually enjoyed the listen as well as the watch, strangely enough. Anyhoo, typing “Mark King solo” into youtube always produces this sort of bass guff:

I don’t believe Mr Wasp accused anyone of ‘ptink put put’ You appear to be putting words into his mouth (or fingers at least)

On the other hand, I could give a flying duck what Chic did, nasty, nasty, nasty…and indeed, poo.

Surely the many Bass players on this forum are not going to let Youngwasp get away with slandering the name of the late great Bernard Edwards? 😯 Did Bernie ever Ptuck ptink put put ?
And as a quick note, i think Bass players should be banned from these events, i once saw and heard a Bass player / Demonstrator plucking away Mark King style on some tarty looking 6 string bass with LED’s all over it for an astonishing 7 hours!! he went on from 10am to 5pm, i could hear his un-melodic ramblings for the whole day, p-tuck p-tuck tuck punk, bink bink bink p-tunny p-tick.

As a bass player I think I can safely say that most of us would like to see the thumbs of such players not-so-surgically removed, they give us a bad rep and sound crap…IMO

Hmmm…….i have the same feeling about Tommy Emmanuel….
In fact i think that all those players have:
1/ songs for “the show”
2/ songs to be listened to.

Unfortunately, I’ve never had the pleasure of witnessing Michael Angelo in the flesh. However, I can vouch for everything Lee says.

I once saw a video of Michael Angelo playing a double necked guitar shaped like a spread eagled letter V, and the sound was a combination of squiggly squeals and not much else.

Oddly enough, I’ve never heard Michael Angelo talk. Is he mute?

Who remembers Michael Angelo?? (Mike chirp in) he played a custom made Dean guitar with 4 necks, it hung around his neck in a X, i saw him at a guitar show, and he played 2 necks at a time then switched to the other 2, he entertained a room of 50 carrier bag ladden guitar buyers, for about 2 mins, and then you started to see the slow march to the door, of they went wandering aimlessly looking for bargains but only picking up leaflets and free magazines and brochures.

Whilst I fully appreciate the effort and time it takes to achieve this level of musicianship/playing ability, I personally find this style of playing to be akin to the Steve Vai School Of Visual Playing.

What I mean by this, music has to be listenable – this is far more an exercise in physical dexterity and is a visual exercise that has to be watched to be appreciated. I couldn’t listen to it and turned the sound off after about 20 seconds.

To reiterate, accomplished player, but the producer of directionless waffle.

Great guitar work, very clever stuff, but i must admit i did bomb out half way through, i couldn’t listen to a whole album of it, but he is a great guitarist.

I think we’re both saying “impressive” in our ironic way, acoustica. Mustard mitt, I did wonder what point there was in fiddling with the tuners myself. Slight showboating, I suspect.

Nice to hear someone play quite quickly but keeping the clarity.

He fluffed 3 notes on the 16th bar, i noticed at 1:21 2:44 and 3:19 mins into the performance he attempted to tune his guitar, which we all know is pointless with a capo on, this leads me to believe he doesn’t really know what he is doing 😯 this is backed up with the chunky knit tank top, Captain beefheart hairdo and Basil Fawlty (you started the war) tash.
Im just about to upload the corrected version of this tune, i’ll get back to you with the URL. 😆

Yeah, my technique is pretty similar, except I don’t use the capo. I reckon that’s just cheating 😆
