Edit to add: proper review is now up: http://www.hitsquad.com/news/blog/roger_waters_dsotm_concert_review/
To be honest I was a little… worried… that Roger might not be able pull it off. After his Live 8 performance I was largely disappointed. Fuck was I wrong. So wrong, I deserve a hiding for even thinking Roger would not put on a killer show.
No fancy entrances, the first half was made up of mainly Pink Floyd hits, but Roger performing Leaving Beirut (lyrics) was just awesome. Very powerful performance and the jabs at George W and the Christian Right had the crowd roaring.
Wish You Were Here was of course a highlight for me, being one of my favourite songs. As was hearing Mother. The female vocalist was a bit of a MILF. Was that a problem for this song, I’m not sure.
The fire explosions and bubbles just added to the experience. None seemed tacky. Only the floating pig distracted the crowd from Waters and the band for a minute or two. Which is good considering we don’t have air-machines in Brisbane yet. It was really awesome to just soak in the man’s talent.
After a 15 minute line up at the toilets, Roger didn’t mess around and got straight into DSOTM. The band performed a lot of the vocals early on here and Roger showed off to the crowd with some nifty playing and body jolting. He absorbs his own music like no other when playing live.
After DSOTM, Roger thanked everyone and the band and left the stage. Thankfully, he returned to perform the rest of his hits which had been advertised on the set list.
Boy did the crowd love getting into Another Brick in the Wall. Who wouldn’t. Whilst it might not be every Pink Floyd fans favourite song, maybe not even in their top 10, it’s undoubtedly an anthem for the masses .
Bring the Boys Back Home couldn’t have been anymore relevant, and to finish up with Comfortably Numb, what more can I say?
If he hasn’t toured your part of the world yet, put some pennies aside and get good seats. You won’t regret it.
