I’m listening to Rolling Stones top 500 songs and the following two fall 257 and 258. Whatever the case, with the volume nice and loud, man you know it’s gonna be a cool song from 00:00:01

The Troggs – Wild Thing
The Who – I Can See For Miles

No messin bout.

Seeing as we’re not just picking guitar-riff openers, I ought to vote for Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side”, in partic Herbie Flowers’ twin double-bass/electric bass slides. Instantly identifiable.

As far as I’m concerned, Guy (re: copyright), if you can post a link that helps others here to see what you mean, go ahead.
I would agree the first few seconds of a song has to grab you
I totally agree.
My favourite :
“Harden my heart” by Quaterflash and this nice saxo opening the track.
“Baker street” by Jerry Rafferty ….another sax…(sorry about that , I know that we are posting on a guitar forum!! 😀 )
“While you see a chance, take it” by steve Winwood and a magical church organ.
“Black Betty” by Ram Jam
……and many others……

Lot of good ones mentioned above, Start Me Up comes to mind as well. Keith Richards is the all time wizard of hooky intros. I would agree the first few seconds of a song has to grab you or you probably won’t be interested in the rest. I remember the first time I heard “Rude Mood ” by SRV, it definately caught my attention, but mostly because I thought the phono was on the wrong speed : )

Are we allowed or not to post those “cool openings”? (I mean 15 or 20 seconds)
I understand of course the meaning of the word copyright but internet is a magic support for artists….isn’t it?

There’s “Sunshine of Your Love” and “White Room” from Cream, and “Layla” from Derek and the Dominoes. Rush has quite a few stellar intros. “Money For Nothing” from Dire Straits. Queensryche’s “Empire”. Those are some of my favorites.

My all-time fave is a little-known song called “Changes” by a band called Glass Harp. I’ve seen it played in concert half a dozen times and it’s one I could recognize if I were totally deaf. The opening bass and drum rolls build the anticipation until it “snaps” with the snare–I love it! 😀

Sweet Child o’ Mine
Anarchy in the UK
Foxy Lady

And I have to agree on ‘Wild Thing’ it was the first song I ever played live, still kicks ass, it’s one of my ‘comfort blanket’ basslines.

What do you think of “too young” by Phoenix?
The muted guitar is wonderful!

Songs with good openings? That’s a good idea. Here are some that caught me in the first six seconds (some record producer, either Tony Hatch or Mickie Most, said something about the first 6 seconds)

Beatles – Hard Day’s Night
Stones – Gimme Shelter
Blue Oyster Cult – (Don’t Fear) The Reaper
Rush – Spirit of Radio
The Farm – Groovy Train

Just a quick throw in, probably have more later. Anyone else?
