N.B: This is a work in progress. I’d like everyone to contribute. Your help adding to this thread will help many players and guitar enthusiasts.

Okay, you’ve just found a junk pile acoustic in your basement. It has a mark on it which is either wet damp setting in or Bo Diddley’s signature. Your pretty sure it’s Bo’s signature though, so you turn to the net to confirm. Which brings us to you being here. Is your guitar worth 44 cents or 44 thousand?

Chances are it’s not even worth 44 cents or his signature, but rather a good sign the foundations of your house are about to cave in. Nevertheless, if you like turning a blind eye to reality (and who doesn’t), here’s how to find out:

    Visit eBay

Search for your guitar on eBay. This will give you an idea of what the market is willing to pay.

    If all else fails

Ask us here in the forum. But please remember to provide pictures and as much information as possible. It takes us a fair bit of time to research the guitars people ask us about, so we can’t check everyone.

Users who post often to the forums and make such requests are more likely to be helped out.

I’ve come across what appears to me either a 1978 – 1980 J-M40 McPherson tri-hole acoustic and am hoping someone might have some additional information as to her roots.

I believe John McPherson was Matt McPherson’s father and produced several designs in the late 70’s and early 80’s of which the J-M40 was one. As producing guitars in the US was particularly expensive during that period he was searching for an alternative production location where the quality and materials could still be top notch, though the end-cost would be less. I am to understand that he traveled to Japan having heard of a few luthiers who were producing very high quality instruments and ended up having several of his tri-hole J-40M’s produced there.

I is a bit more difficult to trace Mr. McPherson’s roots through his son Matt’s current iteration of McPherson instruments. While Matt’s story is pretty inspiring (transitioning from the physics of archery to those of the guitar) and his instruments are certainly phenomenal as is his business model, I must admit to being a bit puzzled why I can find no mention of his father’s work anywhere…?

Can anyone shed a bit of light on this mystery and the early history of McPherson guitars pre-Matt? Were they estranged, or are they even related?

Thanks for anything you guys can offer.
      Johnny

I have three acoustic guitars that I purchased brand new. They wire bought, put in a climate controlled storage unit and never played.i loosened the strings slightly on all three before putting them in the storage unit. The first one is a 2010 Martin d41 standard. The second guitar is a 2011 Taylor 914ce with expression system engleman spruce top and ebony tuners. The third guitar is a 2012 Gibson doves in flight faded red cherry in maple. All three guitars are in their cases in the original boxes. The reason I purchased these guitars was to try to ease the pain of a mistake I made back in 1995.Back when I was thirteen, I’m now 66, I thought I would start a band with my friends on the block. I had a crappy well worn penco electric guitar at the time. Dad takes me to the local music store in Cherry Hill NJ and buys me a brand new 1966 guild starfire V with bigsby tail piece in faded red cherry and a brand new fender bandmaster amp with a chrome stand with wheels. I looked good playing in the band but I sucked at playing the guitar and I still do to this day! The band lasted about a month. The guild was put in the closet, and I traded the bandmaster for a 1966 Schwinn stingray 5 speed. The guild sat in the closet till 95. It was then I came up with the bright idea to go buy an acoustic and try to learn how to finger pick. Pulled the guild out out closet, drove to the music center and traded it for a new penco acoustic guitar with a crappy used cardboard case.Im pretty sure they were high five in each other as I drove away. That guild was in mint condition.i remember dad paid 350.00 for it. Years later I was in the guitar center and on the wall was a 66 guild loaded with nicks and scratches for 3000.00 So that’s my story.Any info on the price of my guitars would be greatly appreciated.

I just bought a tenor guitar with a resonator. The Guitar was “sold as” a 1930’s Regal. the patent # on the resonator, 1896484, Feb 1933; is for its resonator, which was made by the Dopyera bros. (Dobro) The guitar is in excellant condition and there is no branding, anywhere visible without taking it apart. Round neck, Sun Burst. The Resonator design is always on a “1933” year product. Is mine a Regal or a Dobro. Strange there isn’t a single identifing mark other than the Patent number. Thanks, Gary Mc

Hi there! The majority of my collection consists of Gibson’s, and Epiphone’s. To determine the factory, date of manufacture, and production run number for these guitars I use a great site that maybe someone here hasn’t been made aware of: http://www.guitardaterproject.org However, for the life of me, I cannot find out anything about my ESP LTD MH-100QMNT. It is not a bolt-on, and the serial number stamped on the back of the headstock consists of 10 digits. I’ve seen sites that can date ESP’s that have 7, or 8 numbers, but not 10. If ANYONE could help me with this, I would be very grateful! It was manufactured in Indonesia, and the serial #’s are: 1W13110738. I could hazard a guess based on the site I use for dating my Epiphone’s, but that’s all it would be–a guess! If I were to consider 1W=Factory; 1311= November, 2013; 0738= 738th in that production run. Or I suppose 1107 could=November, 2007. I’m stumped! If anyone could help me to solve this mystery, like I said–I would be very grateful!

      Thank you,

      Barnacle Bill

Hello everyone, I am hoping you can help.

I have inherited a Roland G-303 guitar and G-300 synth box. I have been looking online and can not find a valuation for these or much information. Are you able to give me a rough idea of the value of these together?

Serial number I believe is G806281, this is on the back of the headstock and is the only thing resembling a serial number on the guitar. From looking online this would indicate it was manufactured in March 1979 (http://www.chriswareham.net/studio/roland_serial_numbers.html).

The guitar belonged to my father who played in bands in his youth so has the usual marks you would associate with that but is in very good condition.

Any assistance on this is greatly appreciated and I can email pictures of both the guitar and synth box.

      Hey guys?

So, about 14 years ago, my dad bought a white Les Paul Junior that was signed by Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day. He said this is the exactly replica from the tour, and only about 1,200 were made.

I was just wondering if it was legit and how much it’s worth. The number on the head is 080732.

      Thank you!

I looked it up and nothing came up. I bought it at a music shop for a $1000, the guy didn’t mention anything about it. Really need help finding out what it’s worth!

Aria Les Paul serial number 764853
I came upon an Aria led Paul copy in great condition, burgundy finish , DiMarzio pickups, from what I researched it could be made around 1976 , rumours around guitarist friends of mine says that big lawsuit was pushed due to infringement of the copies of big named guitars back in the 70s /80s. Rumours don’t tell me what I have or what it is worth. Thank you Julian H.

However we are afraid we couldn’t track the production detail from the information provided.

Unfortunately there are some record and information had been missing over the year. We apologise for any inconvenience might be caused.”

      Hey guys,

I’m just wondering how much my old Gibson acoustic is worth. I searched the serial number and I think it might have been made in 1967, but I have no idea what I’m doing so I might be wrong.

Anyway, the serial number is: 884874 and there’s a 2 under that number.

The serial number is pressed into the wood on the back of the headstock. As far as I know, the tuning pegs are original as well.

I’m just hoping I can know a little bit about it before I bring it in to the music store.

Thanks a lot for your help!

i have a quest (by vantage i think) atak 1 japanese electric guitar. i believe it was manufactured in the (late?) seventies. it has a modern, angular body and unusualy a humbucking pick up at the neck as opposed to the bridge position where there is a single coil.
does anyone have any other info on this guitar? what might it have cost at the time of manufacture and what is it worth today?

Samicks are made in Korea (you may have heard that they also made Epiphones and numerous other brands) but Samick more recently have an Indonesian facility as Korea now gets relatively pricey. Is there “made in Korea” etched into the lacquer on the back of the headstock? Unfortunately, Korean components (like potentiometers) don’t have date codes on them like American pots do. Very difficult to date a Samick, except by looking at model details against catalogue models.

I’m trying to figure out ANYTHING about my guitar, other than the fact that its a samick, and electric. I’ve gone over every inch of it looking for a serial/part/model number and can’t find a thing. Am I blind? An Idiot? (you’re probably nodding yes, but cut me some slack =P ) any suggestions on where to find something to identify this thing with? I’ll do the research myself, I just need a starting point.

Thanks so much for any help!

If it is a bolt on neck, take the neck off and look in the neck pocket. If not, take off a pickup and look for the pickup number.

Mike means, “Regular contributors to other threads who then post up a ‘what is my guitar worth?’ are more likely to have their question answered.”

He did not mean, “Visitors who continuously bombard us with ‘Here is another one I have found and have not bothered to check because I know you guys will do it for me again’ are more likely to be helped out.”

Just thought I’d better clarify that…
      🙂
