    Hi Guys,

Just wondering if you can help me with a couple of things. I’ve only been learning for 2 months and my girlfriend has just randomly bought me an second hand acoustic guitar. It’s made by Saehan and the model number is SD-51. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this guitar/company- i cant find anything, are they suitable for beginners? I think the company is Korean but doesn’t exist anymore, and i’ve read something about the company manufacturing guitars for Vester in the 1990’s?

Another thing, I’m finding it very difficult to play barre chords since the distance from the strings to the fretboard is really high, and basically i sound horrible. Is there anything i can do to lower the height of the strings? A friend has a Yamaha F310 which is so easy to play since the strings are much closer to the fretboard.

As i’m a total novice, any help would be much appreciated

I had a look around and a couple of SD51s were sold on the New Zealand auction site TradeMe. Unfortunately, no record of what theyv went for. Iassume you´ve seen the two Saehan reviews on http://www.harmonycentral.com. Neither is the SD51 but it´s interesting how the subject of having the right strings to suit the guitar comes up. Also, the 12-string reviewer paid 175 quid for his which is pretty significant even for a 12er. It´s obviously not a plank and you might want to consider spending about 25 quid for a setup with new strings. Ask at nearby guitar shops.

Don’t know the make you refer to, as for the Barre chords, if you are getting to a half decent standard ditch the acoustic guitar and buy an electric, the strings are usually set to a lower action, and tend to be a much lighter gauge.

If you want to persevere with the acoustic then there are 2 simple things to try, try putting on an extra light set of strings, this will create less tension on the neck and lower the action, if it’s still too high remove the strings the bridge piece should then come out, sand this down a little (not too much) and this should lower the action again, if this fails then it’s a trip to the guitar shop for a proper setup.

      Good luck.
