I’m planning on order a capo and a thumbpick online on musiciansfriend, and I don’t know much about these. I am guessing any of those on the site would be fine, but thought i’d get feedbacks from you guys before ordering.

Let me know if you have tips/recommendations
thanks!

Shubb capos are nice. So are the D’ddario ones. Just don’t lose it cause they’re pretty expensive as capos go.

We have written a detailed guide to capos at:
https://www.guitarsite.com/Best-Guitar-Capo/

I hope this helps,
Jason.

got the shubb capo, ernie ball thumbpicks and korg CA 40 chromatic tuner.

Tuner: great, i dont think theres any better tuner than this one i have(my d string was apparently way out of tune, it picked up as f#)

Shub capo: Just tried it out today for wonderwall, took me a while to figure out how to put it on since it was my first time using a capo. Great, no buzzing or anything. Earlier someone mentioned rubber can be replaced when it wears out, where can u get one online? But I assume this capo will last a long time.

thumbpick: In my opinion, not really the best way to play guitar with it. I find regular picks/even strumming with my fingers much better than thumbpicks. But the price was cheap for this, so I dont regret it. Maybe it takes time to get used to it.

no, i haven’t had a chance to order them yet. I was on vacation for a while, now I am back. I am probably gonna order them sometime this week, and I will let you all know how they are.

p.s. im probably not drill a hole in my guitar. not gonna have a strap for a while

Any update on this? I’ve been away for a while and just thought there may have been some response, i.e. did you buy what you said you’d decided on and what were the results? It may help others when faced with the same decisions.

microsark,

thanks for your advice. It is really tempting. But, for some reason, i am really scared of drilling a whole and putting a screw into my precious guitar.. and I don’t have any experience with this because I am still a beginner guitarist.

Just found this web page with a picture of how to place the second strap button as I’ve described…

Hope this helps

On another note – the Kyser capos are great – for the first few months, then the spring weakens and they buzz like hell.

Try this http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/521-shubb_c1_electric_acoustic_capo

No springs or elastic to wear out, compact, lightweight, inexpensive and 100% accurate.
So what strap button would you recommend?
Try here http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/3695-dr_parts_end_pin_chrome

You just screw it in to the neck, at the back where it joins the guitar, preferably as I said pointing a little ‘downwards’ as you stand holding the guitar, then the strap can’t slip out.

Yes, you can go for the expensive alternatives (locking systems and all that stuff), but IMHO it’s totally in-necessary.

Incidentally the thing you’re thinking of buying from MF is just a fancy clip/release for a headstock strap attachment (i.e. neck tethers) and WILL, I GUARANTEE make your guitar sound out of tune as soon as you move, plus, as someone else pointed out, the strap will always be in your way and the guitar tends to slip easily.
but buy another strap button (they cost pence and just screw in). Fit it to the heel of the neck (where the neck joins the body) pointed away from you (i.e. on the underside of the heel pointed slightly towards the floor as you hold the guitar) rather than at the back of the heel or pointed towards the headstock, that way the strap can’t accidentally pull off. If you do use a strap with neck tethers you will probably find that the guitar goes out of tune a lot as the weight of the guitar, however slight, bends the neck a little tiny fraction every time you move.
So what strap button would you recommend? I only see that martin strap button on MF site. Also I don’t really understand the strapping technique you are describing here. That’s probably because I have never seen it.

This is what I am planning on ordering in a few days. Feel free to comment on anything.

Tuner: Korg CA-40 Electronic Chromatic Tuner

Strap button: Martin guitar strap button

Capo: It’s either Kyser or Shubb. But for me, shubb seems to be harder to use than kyser, so I am thinking about purchasing the kyser one.
Kyser: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Kyser-QuickChange-Capo-6String?sku=361600

Shubb: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Shubb-Deluxe-S-Series-Steel-String-Capo?sku=361502

Thumbpick
: Ernie Ball thumb picks medium

Strap: These are two possibilities

or

Thanks guys
Good point, except that I think it’s the weight of your upper body shifting rather than that of the guitar. Unless you’re about as animated as the keyboard player from Sparks, you’re going to bend the neck as you go stage-prancing.
I hadn’t thought of thet – and there was me trying to be all scientific about it. Bugger, shot down in flames again!
😉

In truth I think it’s probably a combination of things but the original premise still holds, i.e. it does seem to go out of tune. I used to find this even when not being very animated (although I usually am fairly hyper unless sitting down) using that type of strap attachment. I think its a leverage thing.

Capo : Shubb, everytime. They do one for every neck type and you can get replacement rubbers when they wear out.

Thumb Pick : Ernie Ball Medium – other makes are just too heavy if you want to combine picking and strumming.

Strap : I find suede ones to be the most comfortable and they don’t ‘slip’ round your neck when you take your hands off the guitar, but buy another strap button (they cost pence and just screw in). Fit it to the heel of the neck (where the neck joins the body) pointed away from you (i.e. on the underside of the heel pointed slightly towards the floor as you hold the guitar) rather than at the back of the heel or pointed towards the headstock, that way the strap can’t accidentally pull off. On the occasions that I’ve had to attach a strap right up to the headstock, I really don’t like having 2.5″ of leather/nylon blocking my view. I prefer the type with a thin end that can be sent up to the headstock while still having a wider section for going round your back and over the shoulder.

I’ve picked up on a few that can be had from MF, and some of them are pretty good value, too. BTW, although leather looks better with an acoustic, I have a nylon strap with the “luggage” style quick-release and it’s a very handy feature.

Yep, they work with a normal strap. Perhaps regular acoustic players might chime in with other suggestions, though 🙂

okay, straps with strings in the end seem be a big hassle, so I don’t think I am getting those.

The martin strap button seems a lot better. I found the same thing on musiciansfriend. So All I need is that and a regular strap right?

Surprises me, but not a problem. You just need a strap that has laces on one end for tying round the headstock. Here’s a selection on eBay:
http://instruments.search.ebay.com/acoustic-guitar-strap_Parts-Accessories_W0QQcatrefZC12QQfromZR40QQsacatZ20829
but your local guitar shop will have some.

An alternative is to get a Martin leather headstock strap, to which you can attach a normal guitar strap:

well yes, there’s on on the bottom. But that’s it. I don’t see one around the neck/body join.

Surely the D10S has a strap button on the butt of the guitar and also around the neck/body join? If so, then any guitar strap will do. If not, then you could get an acoustic strap which has that stringy loop for tethering around the headstock. I’d be amazed if the D10 lacks the neck/body strap button though.

Alright. So either of the capos you mentioned would work for my washburn D10s?

I am also looking for a strap, but I don’t know how it would work for my guitar. I could put one end of a strap to my bottom part of the guitar but then i dont know where i would put the other end. Thanks for the help guys

I use Kyser Capos – easy to put on and off your guitar, and they last – I’ve had one of them for years…

I can vouch for a Shubb capo, i have 2 of these and they are simple to use, make sure you choos the right one for your guitar, some are flat and some have a radius to them.
Also when you fit the capo don’t make it too tight, otherwise you pinch the strings down and make the guitar do sharp, you will sound slightly out of tune with the rest of the band, and put the capo as close to the capped fret as possible.
Thumb picks are cheap, buy a few and see what you like.
