I just got an ESP LTD AX-260 thinking it was made of basswood or mahogany, and now I find out that it's made out of Agathis. What the hell is Agathis? It sounds crappy clean.

Some people like it. Some people hate it. It's big on cheaper guitars down here because the wood comes from Indo and other Pacific places. Not known for it's tonal qualities.

260 has a Mahogany neck.

I get wood quite often, but leaving aside my other internet activities...

Agathis is an eastern wood very similar in properties to alder, which is extensively used by US makes. Alder has always been a "sounds like chicken" wood, falling tonally in the middle of everything; not as bright as maple, not as warm as mahogany, but it's a perfectly good bodywood (most Fenders are alder and have been for yonks). Agathis is used more by the Korean etc makers because it's easier to source than North American Alder but it really is very similar tonally and I wouldn't complain personally. IMO, basswood is a lump of balsa shite with thin sustain and terrible resistance to dings. I'd far rather my guitar were made of agathis than basswood or poplar, if that's any consolation.

If it's got EMGs on it (which is highly likely on an ESP LTD series) then it doesn't matter what wood it's made from - it'll sound the same anyway.

Actually it has some ESP LH-150's on there. I think the EMG's only come on AX 400's

My friend Sean had a Japanese 68 strat reissue, but it was made of basswood, he never liked it, and i must admit it was one of the worst Jap Strats ive played, and it weighed a ton too.

Well, it sounds good, but my old Gibson Baldwin SG sounded waaaaay better... and I bought that for $84 used. I bought my AX for $400. Oh for any of you semi-new people, check out my guitar website at www.freewebs.com/guitar4you. Tell me what you think!!!

I also briefly had a Fender Jap Strat made from basswood and for some reason I could never put my finger on it never did it for me either.

It's better to form an opinion of a guitar if you can actually put a finger on it Laughing . That said, I'm surprised a balsawood (sorry, basswood) guitar weighed so much tonnage. Normally, they're lightweight; about their only plus-side.
