i tend to go for heavier riffs
e.g.
the verse riff in metallica’s broken, beat & scarred springs to mind 😀
but best of all time?
hendrix’s wah intro for voodoo chile

I think there can be no best riff ever but there are many excellent ones.
Take for example come let it be by beatles. excellent riff that has become difficult even for the original player is crushing day. satch have always said he cant easily play it again 😛 -
I think the greatest (maybe) 4 notes in R&R are in Shine on You Crazy Diamond.

I actually went to 2:30 to remind myself what you meant. What an idiot I felt when it played 😳 Of course, difficult to think of a more recognizable 4-noter.
Not wishing to deviate (I nearly went off on “best intro” a coupla posts back in this thread) but another 4-note fave of mine, and probably the first bass line I plated to, is The Cure “A Forest”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HY7wuV_C1oI
and another I like is the ‘chorus’ here just after one minute:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLzY-PISy-kI once hummed it in the coffee queue (I was already considered the works weirdo) and my assistant said “what’s that you’re humming?”
The reply “Kitchens of Distinction; The Third Time We Opened The Capsule” just made her go, “yeah, I might have guessed” -

I usually don’t play the “best” game since there is so much great music out there but in this case I’ll go with Gilmour as well.
However, I consider the “Coming Back To Life” part more a melody than a riff.

😆 One of our posters had a cover of ‘Cortez…’ on his Myspace, the ‘Heavy Dime’ guy.
Best riff…man, can’t even chose the best riff in my record collection!
But I like the idea of the thread so, umm…nope that didn’t work just been through loads of CDs 🙁 I’ll work on it!
Tricky one, that but I’d also vote for Stones if forced to pick just one. My vote would go to the opening of “Gimme Shelter”, though. As soon as you hear it, you know a great song is coming.
HST, I am very tempted to switch to Gilmour’s wonderful riff about 2/3 of the way into “Echoes”. Take a look at this YooToob clip and the riff appears about 3:10

Yep, I’ve decided to scrap Stones and go with Gilmour.
I gotta say, I can’t stand the stones but that riff is fantastic.
As is the Echoes riff. I’m probably going to be universally hated for this but my vote is a toss up between “Coming Back To Life” – Floyd and Neil Youngs “Cortez the Killer” 🙂
