I have built my own single pickup guitar with a Tele style bridge. I followed a wiring diagram from a well-known pickup manufacturer's website and included a volume control, a tone control and a killswitch that cuts off the 'hot' output of the pickup. All the components used are fairly cheap, entry level stuff. My problem is that although the electrics work I am getting a sort of 'microphoning' effect from the controls when I touch them: scratches' clicks and so-on. It is different from scratchy pots, the pots are fine in this aspect. It is especially bad with distortion or more trebly settings. What have I done wrong? Can anyone help?

I'm living with this. It's not as bad as all that and having mucked about with my other (commercially built) guitars at high gain settings they can be made to do it too, although to a much lesser extent. Perhaps its just a result of the cheapo components. Thanks to all the people who took a look at this comment (currently 172 views).

Sounds like a shielding/ grounding problem. Have you shielded the control cavities? A ground wire leading from the top of the pots to the bridge and shielded compartments may solve your problem.

Hi. Yes the top of the pots is grounded to the bridge but I'll give it a go shielding the cavities. Thanks for your reply.
