    Seven singer-songwriters are featured singing, strumming and strutting their stuff in the upcoming Women with Guitars Chicago showcase weekend June 24 & 25 (Friday and Saturday). This will be the first “International” Women with Guitars showcase weekend as they present Kristin Sweetland of Ontario, now being hailed as one of Canada’s “hottest young guitar players”.

    This will be the first “International” Women with Guitars showcase weekend as they present Kristin Sweetland of Ontario, now being hailed as one of Canada’s “hottest young guitar players”. Sweetland began her guitar-pickin’ career at age 13 with a red electric Stratocaster that matched her lipstick. She is much lauded for both her intricate instrumental guitar work and deep poetic lyricism. Her music combines broad influences from roots, classical, world music and rock ‘n roll traditions in a way that is rich, delicious and utterly refined.

    Kim Char Meredith, Hawaii Music Award Winner (“Favorite Pop Recording Artist”)

    Kim Char Meredith in an acoustic pop/rock dynamo whose stint as opening act for Melissa Etheridge in Honolulu “was perhaps the best concert pairing of the year” (Honolulu Star-Bulletin). Response outside her home state of Hawaii has been equally effusive: New York reviewer Jed Ryan noted: “…Whether on disc or live, no one can express sheer joy and happiness better than Kim Char Meredith…Her voice is undeniably sweet, but like the other women of rock ‘n roll, she can belt… In person, she is just as captivating as her music.” Meredith is a Hawaii Music Award winner (“Favorite Pop Recording Artist”).

    The Walker Project’s musical style freely blends folk and poetry with spoken word and soul. Carole Walker’s songwriting goes far beyond convention, as she weaves her lyrics into a tapestry of spoken word, poems, and heartfelt songs all wrapped in her warm powerful voice. Ohio audiences nominated the Walker Project for the 2003 Cammy Award.

    emith is a duo features songwriter Carol H on vocals and guitar, and highly respected guitarist Stevie Gurr (Dr. John, Elvin Bishop, and others) on guitar, bass and harmonica. emith’s style of music features melodic, haunting influences from rock, folk, country, blues, and Celtic genres.

    Liz Bowater is emerging on the music scene in the Chicago-land area. In the past three years, she has independently released two EPs and one full-length album. She has been booked on the same bill as such world-renowned musicians as Bill Mallonee, Sufjan Stevens, and Denison Witmer and has built a growing fan-base. A new full-length album is in the works for 2005.

    Becky Johnson is a young singer-songwriter devoted to being candidly honest in her songs. Her words come from her heart and she hopes to convey that passion to anyone who is willing to listen. Johnson says, “I believe a single person can make a difference in improving society. I hope to do just that.”

    Sandy Andina is a Chicago singer, songwriter, and musician who brings humor, insight, and years of life experience on stage with her. Brooklyn-born, Sandy also lived in the Pacific Northwest and has been a Chicagoan since 1978. Many also know her as an attorney and political volunteer, but music is and has always been her first love.
