Ive been getting into a bit of bass playing recently, and me and a guitarist/vocalist friend want to start a 3 or 4 peice rock covers band, But do you think we can get a drummer? where the hell are all the amatuer drummers? surely there must be a learner out there somewhere who wants to jam/gig ? ive put ads in Loot, and on a muscians contact board and so far nothing… so where do i start recruiting? any suggestions?

Why do singers also see themselves as leaders? every band ive been in has been a democracy til it comes down to set lists, you get the ‘oh thats out of my key’, and ‘ i just cant feel it, and if i cant feel it i cant sing it’ PA’s and Mics is a good call bass, i think we have all been there.

Your playing with fire now – prepare for the onslaught of vocalists who trawl the web just aching to defend their art, and lozengers.

And your right, the Vs was a cracker.

😆 , I like that late-90s “vs” rapthing, as in “useful players vs singer”.

In my exp, a piece of hard rock maple bolted to a lump of ash (or even a 16″ floortom) beats a honey-and-lemon throat lozenge every time.

      of course they do.

heh just to add. your singer and band name comment made me think of a line from the simpsons: “Moe Szyslak Experience featuring Homer.”

Not nearly enough “Experiences” these days.

Mike, at first I wondered if I’d been on a band version of “Groundhog Day”. Asking around, it really does seem that singers act like that the world over.

Tempted as I am to join in; “Drummer for a brain transplant? It’s like giving someone my lungs and liver” – I do have sympathy for the no-show drummer. The instrument that most depends on being acoustically sound in the first instance.

A £300 kit really does sound like perphooey. Even a £450 Premier or Pearl needs some serious outlay on Remo heads, Zildj-Sab-or Paiste cymbals (another £300) and still the hardware is toast, the snare a glorified biscuit tin. After splashing a grand; whaddaya get? Sat at the back with the “toilet” sign over your head and jokes like “what’s got three legs and a tit on top?”

Vocalists – now that does get me on a rant. I don’t mean the useful ones, who play guitar and sing; I’m gunning for the ‘singer’ types. “Singers” learn their first two complete sentences early in life:

      (1) “Does anyone need a hand?” – said at 9:45 as they waltz in late clutching a mic.

      (2) “The PA is expensive, I think it’s fair if we all chip in to pay for it”

and they’re talking about a little, pub-venue, vocals-only thing that costs about £500.

I got sick of this, so I bought a 400W PA for rehearsal. The guitarist bought a 1000W PA for gigs. The vocalist talked about upgrading from the Peavey PV-i (£25) to the Shure SM58 – “but they’re nearly £100, you know”. Soon, you’ll hear the idea that the band-name should be changed to Lead Singer and the Bandname 🙄 . Dontcha just love ’em.

Thanks to Pop Idol/American Idol etc, there’s no trouble finding some eedjit convinced (s)he’s a singer – but finding a useable/bearable one is murder.

He was rushed to hospital and had to undergo a total brain transplant which resulted in him losing his memory, cos obviously he now has somebody elses memory and he supposedly now doesnt now know how to play the drums, what an excuse! doh.

[quote=”pedalboardguy”]….all the good drummers I’ve met lately play in church.

we tried one of those, a bible beating, holy moses thumping drummer from Tilbury (localy known as the SE Essex Delta), he didnt have a drum kit as the one he uses was a permanent fixture of the Tilbury pentagostal church of the new beleivers. So i set up a rehearsal at a new studio in Essex, we arranged a drum kit for him, with cymbals, and he doesnt drive so our vocalist arranged to pick him up, and what happened? he did’nt show 👿 is there anything more annoying? it cost us £45 for the abandoned night. Amen brothers. 😆

Hey, I have the same problem as you, but in a different way. I’m a guitarist, and I started up a band with a bassist and a drummer, but I can’t find a vocalist. I have the exact same problem. We’ve put up needed signs, but no replies. If you get any info, let me know.
