After a post-cig re-read of my previous “late 60s thick vinyl vs picturediscs” typing, I can hear my kagoul rustle 😳 .
Maybe a kindly moderator should do the decent thing and delete me 😆 . Ah, nostalgia.

You’re right, Dave. “Sartori in Tangier” (never afraid to use a pretentious title) was the theme to the “Late Night in Concert” series. Blimey, you’ve got a good memory – although I never had a video so just go on grey-cell storage of the original airing.
You made me look through my old, unplayed in years, vinyl. I really must get a working turntable off the Fleeb. I’ve still got “Court of…” on the original Island (mine) and Polydor (Mrs Bass). It’s funny how damn heavy an LP is when made before the oil crisis of ’73. The Polydor is like a wibbly-wobbly jelly by comparison. There are some others worth dropping a needle on; Velvet Underground boxed set, the “Dark Side of the Moon” picture disc (I know – picture discs sound inferior), REM’s IRS-label albums that were actually good (like “Fables of the Reconstruction”) unlike the soporific pap they’ve done for Warners (or is it EMI? Who cares?).
Must agree, the Stick selling for £750 is a bit of a steal. Righties I’ve seen sell in the £1100 region. This is the bizarre thing I’ve noticed with lefty bass. The cheap stuff fetches silly prices (I know, I’ve sold off some), but the real once-in-a-lifetime stuff often attracts no bids. Small market I guess. BTW, if I haven’t plugged him already, do have a look at my chum Arni’s site, http://www.leftybass.com

I had that on video too – however it was on an old Betamax tape! I think I still have it somewhere – I’ll have a look. Will need to get the betamax out of the attic in order to convert to DVD first!
Lee, I’m 😯 ed. I’d love a Stick, but it’s a fight between my ability and my wallet as to which is lacking most.
Does anybody remember “Late Night In Concert” on BBC2? I seem to remember it introduced by Annie Nightingale, all husky-voice and “Bird’s Nest Soup” hairstyle. Anyhoo, one gem was “new” King Crimson somewhere in the South of France. It opened with “Waiting Man” and Belew crossing sticks with Bruford on the Simmons pads. Then it got even better. “I do think it’s good”. Is that available on some DVD somewhere?
Absolute best wishes on the Stick-sale. Hope it goes well.
Thanks a squillion, 1bass.
The Stick is now in the hands of a chap in Farnham. I pulled it from eBay as no one was bidding and I was getting some dopey emails (and some good ones but some less that interesting to a seller!) I was made a private offer and it just had to go. It went for £750 which is a song given that a new one would cost £1800 and would take from 9 months to a year to arrive.
That “Late Night In Concert” Crimson gig was a real gem and this is where I learned to play “Waiting Man” on the stick by watching Tony Levin. I had it on video but lost it somewhere.
Also, the theme tune to this programme was by…. King Crimson and opens with….. T.Lev on Stick (can’t remember the name of the track but it’s the one before “Waiting Man” on the “Beat” album). A lot of those tracks open with T.Lev on Stick.

Lee, I don’t know what planet you’ve been living on but the Chapman Stick has been around for years!!
That’s what I thought!
Also, that Nick Beggs from Kajagoogoo (don’t pretend you don’t remember them) used to play one too!

Better yet Lee, get a copy of the DVD “Eyes Wide Open” by King Crimson. One side is a Japanese concert (2003) and the other side was recorded at Shepherds Bush Empire in 2000. Trey Gunn will demonstrate what Stick playing is all about. Of course, Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew ain’t too shabby either. Great songwriting and virtuoso technique combine in an experience truly worth your time and money. SB

Some examples:
1. “Elephant Talk” King Crimson
2. “Waiting Man” King CrimsonBoth of the above begin with an exposed Stick riff.
For an explanation go to http://www.stick.com which is Emmett Chapman’s site.
One word of warning.. you might just get hooked by the idea of owning one of these (I know I did).
