Oh man....that would be a dead giveaway. Let's try a more obvious clue (though you really need to look at some of the last ones....I mean, I'm spelling it out for you!):
CLUE #5:
In 1965, when their first hit (a cover) went #1 in their country, it went to #22 in the U.S., but their first U.S. top 10 didn't hit until 4 years later. Their only #1 in the U.S. was also released with an awesome B-side track, but if I gave the name of either song you'd surely get it. You guys just HAVE to guess who it is now!!!
Ok, you talked me into it: the country is Canada.
Who's next? |

OK the gloves are off,
Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Denny Doherty (of The Mamas & the Papas), David Clayton-Thomas, Neil Young, Andy Kim, Zal Yanovsky (of The Lovin' Spoonful), John Kay (of Steppenwolf), and Ian & Sylvia ??? or Stan Rogers, Murray McLauchlan, Bruce Cockburn and Willie P. Bennett???
Rush, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Bruce Cockburn, April Wine, Pat Travers and Neil Young???
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young??????????? |

Lee, you are painstakingly close at this point. I think the only group you've left out is the one that is the answer to this question. You really do need to put these clues together though, because I think you already know it if you do. I've basically written it into the clues for you; you'll be kicking yourself once you see it:
| Code: | CLUE #1:
This group, originally formed in 1960, was one of the first to establish a major successful following in their own country while still residing there. You know them by their more popular name, which they eventually were forced to switch to shortly after their first hit (a cover song, btw), which made it to #1 in their country.
CLUE #2:
Their immediate follow-ups to their first hit were met with major success in their country, but with little success elsewhere. Remember when I told you you know them by their later, more popular name? Well, that popular name became permanant in 1965 when the person for whom the band was originally named for left the band shortly after their new keyboardist and lead vocalist arrived (sorry, can't give away the year yet).
CLUE #3:
This new keyboardist and the group's guitatrist became the bands main composers until lifestyle differences led the guitarist to leave the group during their unfinished 1970 album, and he subsequently formed another band, which eventually evolved into a supergroup (which I can't name).
CLUE #4:
Remember, their first #1 hit was only a #1 in their country (not the UK, btw). And they only had one #1 in the U.S., which was famously covered/remade a few years back (more like 10 years back, I think).
So....those are some good clues. Can you guess who it is now?

I've filled in some of the previously omitted years above, so that should help, but now I'm giving it away with this playbill:

Nooooooo! C'mon!
Here's a real pic ^
And for my FINAL clue (all but giving it away):
CLUE #6:
They were the first Canadian rock group to have a #1 hit in the U.S.
Now go ahead....search your search engines and cheat!.....hell, at this point, it may be your only hope! You guys are gonna die when you find out who it is and how I've spelled it out for ya. |

So I can assume you guys finally see all the "can you GUESS WHO it is now?" references??? Geez, and to think, I thought you'd get it in the first clue or two! I hope I didn't set the bar too high because I think I got lucky....I don't think I'm as good at this game as y'all are; I was having a hard time at some of the previous bands/artists. "Guess" those clues were harder than I thought...
So what gave it away? Was it the pics? or the final Canadian #1 hit clue?
Well, it was fun anyways. Who's next? |

PS - you guys have seen the old U.S. tv show "Name That Tune", I assume? (forgive me if this program originated elsewhere....I have only seen it on U.S. tv.....) But as for our previous aformentioned band, it made me think of that show:
Lee: "Bob, I can name that band in 1......2......3......clues!" etc. etc. etc.
Michael: "Bob, I can name that band in 6 clues! (with a lil' help from some pics)"
Good show, anyways. I miss it, even though it was before my time. I used to watch the re-runs.
Sorry, back to our regularly scheduled program.... |
