Andrew Gold by chance???

He wrote the theme song for Golden Girls (NOT my favorite show, btw) called "Thank You For Being a Friend" and it was sung by some girl (?). Also played a few different instruments....

I don't think that's it though. Damnit! This is hard!

Evil or Very Mad , "Golden Girls" turned up on my search of all your clues, but I got sidetracked by "Moonlighting". I thought you said a 1985 "popular" show. Golden Girls sucked Major League; even the inevitable adult-DVD ripoff was worse than Shaving Ryan's Privates

I wasn't familiar with the adults only version of Golden Girls. Until now. There really is a Hell.

Neither was I, Mike; I just made it up (although it sounded just too plausible). Until you'd posted that it existed and had watched it, I'd have never believed it.
