Alright... I'm comin up on playin guitar for about 4 and I think I may be ready for a guitar that will last and make me happy for EVER!!!!!!!!!!! I just don't think that playind for four year and the best guitar I've owned was a Dean Vendetta XMS or XM somethin... mixes well. I'm thinking of a Gibson... but want to be cost effective and I don't have the $ for a nice Les Paul or Firebird, so what should I get. Oh and can you change your username because I'm sick of bein called Starcaster man... It cramps my style...although the level of style I posses is uncertain Wink

Hey, is it possible to help me out here. There's like 20 views with only my submitions. HELP ME OUT.

P.S. When I say I've been playing for four years in the write up, then say in my little writey-thingey description I've been playin for 2 years, I mean 2 years of incredibly serious (I'm in 2 bands) and 2 years of just jammin.

Do you prefer the Gibson humbuckers/set neck style over the Fender single coil/bolt-on neck style? If a Gibson is too expensive and an Epiphone too cheap, you could look around for the Japanese made Yamahas and Tokais (not the Korean bolt-on cheapies). They're not bargains anymore but they are great guitars and have kudos.

I can help, what you need is a Gibson standard SG, they are incredible, ive been playing guitar for 30 yrs, i have, Gibson SG, a Les Paul Standard, a Gibson ES335, a Tokai Reborn (1979 model) Tokai LP Special with P90's, Fenders from all walks of life and the guitar i always take out and gig is the SG, its a stock bog standard model, if you can live without the binding then go for a SG Special, don't get the faded models, go for a solid colour or Cherry, standard or special.
Problem sorted.

Thanks Lee,but I'm really not up for buying and SG because there are just too many faux SG's out there and you really can't be 100% sure it's a genuine Gibson unles you basically inspect it (more or less the head Smile ) And a Les Paul is a little too pricey for my blood (although I would love a '59 Les Paul) I also like the Epiphone Les Pauls but they are so small they make my feel like I'm playing with a "Little Rocker" set from Fisher Price Laughing .What do you guys think of the Epiphone Fire bird? Oh and as somebady asked, my price range is centered at no more than $600 (so lasting a good amount of time might be a good trait of the guitar).

Oh the type of music I play is quite varried. I play metal, soft rock, hard rock, prog, "classic" (meaning the BEST) rock...everything basically. Also, if the guitar had those awesome Gibson... lites I think for strings... that would be a HUGE plus.

I did a comparison of $550-$600 guitars on MF that you could have a look at:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/compare?base_pid=515721&base_pid=516660&base_pid=511294&base_pid=518145&base_pid=518341&base_pid=515619&base_pid=515526&base_pid=512591&base_pid=519370&base_pid=519375

don't worry about some of them having a lot of "n/a", you can click on the guitar to get a fuller descn. I threw in some leftfield stuff along with the obvious Epiphone and Fender Mex and tried to look for stuff with HSS or coiltaps or something else that helps the versatility, seeing as you play a lot of different genres.

If you can throw out the styles that don't float your boat, you might get more useful ops on those that remain from the better guitarists (than me, for sure) here.
