ok, on my guitar the G string is wierd. it wont ring for very long. it will ring for about 5 seconds and all the others will for about 10. it sounds kind of dead too. what do i do to fix it>

it only does this when its open, when i am playing on the fret board its fine

Obvious answer is to change the strings, but i assume you have already done this, if so, then have a look at the nut, has it been cut correctly? did you get this problem on older sets of strings? , it could be a 'dead spot' on the neck, but they usualy occur on a fretted position along the neck, if this is the case then they can prove very difficult to cure, i had 2 dead spots on my Gibson Hummingbird, on the 3rd string 14th fret, didnt bother me a great deal as i rarely play on the 14th fret on a dreadnaught accoustic, but i found after time the problem went.

it is not the string, i just put new ones on. and i dont think it is the nut either. at first i thought it was but then what i did is i put a little piece of paper in the nut slot just to raise it up a bit and it didnt help

Putting paper in the nut groove will actualy dampen the string, so it's best not to do this. Has the intonation been set correctly on the guitar?, also is this an electric guitar? maybe the pickup pole peice?? long shot i know.
One extra thing i would check to see if it's a dead spot is take the 'G' out of concert pitch tuning, drop it down a whole tone, tune it down to 'F' does it still occur? then tune it up to 'A' does it still occur?? if it does take the string out and move it across to the groove on the nut reserved for the 'A' string, and run it down to the corresponding groove over the bridge 'A' string see if it still occurs, Let us know the results.

I'm afraid it IS the nut. The best solution is to fill the offending hole with epoxy resin (NOT the quick drying stuff) and let it go hard over a couple of days then re-cut the slot " a little bit at a a time" until it gets to the correct depth. You'll need a razor saw for this.
I'd recommend a new nut made of bone or brass or whatever the latest composite material happens to be.
If your guitar is an expensive one, get the job done professionally.

GG, Seeing as Lee and Dave are spot-on (the big clue for me is that only open causes a prob), can I now be totally juvenile?
I  d when I saw "Help, my G-string is acting weird", I absolutely  d when I read that it was affecting your ring, but if I even try to consider your nuts...

It would be interesting to find out the solution from GG, was it the nut?
