| Wonky "other" vote. Like many bass players, I don't get hung up on 'vintage' and I'd rather spunk 3k on all-singing uber-technology. Mmmm, graphite. |

Lets keep it simple, for rock there are 2 guitars, SG and Les Paul, for everything else there is Fender...

| I think Gibson guitars are high quality instruments, but I've always been a fender player. If I had an extra 3K layin' around, I'd buy 3 nice fenders! Then, I'd buy a LesPaul with my next extra 3K. |

| Sorry Bulsara, I wasn't criticizing your poll. By "wonky vote" I meant that, as a bass player, I'll skew your results. Unlike guitarists, few bass players would spend that money on a Fender, and Gibson doesn't even appear on the radar. No offence meant to your post at all. |

Crumbs! Does anybody use graphite these days. All the rage with the Status bases back in the days of the impressive "thwang bass" style that he was so famous for.
My mate had a graphite Stick and when we compared sounds we both prefered my wooden one... he now has a wooden one (ooh-er Mrs).
Years ago I worke at the Bass Centre in Wapping so was able to play every bass that came in. I was NOT impressed by any of the graphite ones we had. Along with the Warwicks (wooden bases), the graphites had a non-descript sound lacking in character. The only Status bass that sounded good was the cheaper.. wooden body, two Jazz type pickup passivejob. Only the neck was graphite.
With bases I've come to the conclusion that you have to play the type you use as "it's self". By this I mean that a Precision has a particular function but I wouldn't use one for stuff that I'd use a Jazz for. The characters of these bases are destinct and, as a result, valuable. A mate of mine is a sworn MusicMan freak (as am I ) but when he whipped out his newly aquired vintage Telecaster Bass I nearly left the building. But then he played it and it was perfect for the job in hand (no sniggering in the back, there). |

Rocklogicxxxxx i had no idea you are a 'Bass expert' how about some advice??
im a 6 string player for many many years and im in a original material band playing guitar, im now thinking of getting a Bass and Amp and starting a band with a friend of mine playing classic rock covers, but i need the initial setup, i have £1,200 for a bass and gigging (small venues) amp, ive been leaning toward a Ricky 4003 bass and an Ashdown EVO 2 head and 15" bass cab (blue speaker, and all used values) as recomended by Bassleft, do you have any advice??
