When you play triads in a rhythmic pattern that iare not a riff. When you play dyads in a melodic phrase that's a riff. Dyads in a rhythmic pattern are not a riff either but can be a fill. I don't really consider fifths to be real chords and there are intervals than can be in a rhythmic pattern but aren't chords either. Basically a chord can't be a riff in my opinion.
