Condition matters (eg, my chum Pat in Mexico was selling a lefty '69 P but it had been refinished, partially stripped etc. I think it only went to about $750). Any chance of a pic someday?

Hey Lee,

The bass Michael found on eBay didn't meet reserve because 69 Jazz basses are selling retail for $4,000-$6,000 USD in the U.S. SB

His one is black with a white pick guard, looks a bit worn, but also looks original, he has owned it for 25+ years and obviously bought it 2nd hand back then. Ill try and get a picture of it, are you sure 4-6k? that seems a lot, i suppose condition and originality comes it to it.

Hey Lee,

I went back and double checked the price guide and I am off a bit. It is the Sonic Blue 69 Jazz, that's worth 4-6k. This of course is a rare color so the price is quite a bit higher than common colors. The price guide doesn't list black, but they value 69 sunburst and cream finishes between 3-4k. I bought a 73 Jazz a couple of years ago off eBay for $1,500 and the 2005 price guide has it listed for $2,000 so I don't think they are inflating prices too much. There appears to be roughly a $1,000 drop in price when moving from a 1969 to a 1970 so clearly an instrument from the 60's has psychological value to Fender collectors. Also keep in mind that these values are for instruments in excellent condition. Hope this elaboration helps you get a better fix on the value of your friends bass. SB
