I went to see them once (Transvision Vamp, that is), I'll admit to that.

They were appalling. The guitarist with his Gretsch White Falcon was incapable of playing, so they had a second guitarist doing all the real guitar work on a Strat while the official fellow just posed with his instrument. For an encore they just repeated one of the songs they'd payed earlier because they'd run out of material. Absolutely dreadful.

Hijacking slightly, I went to review a couple of unsigneds and couldn't much avoid the headline act, "Shampoo" (remember them?). They were given the typical, merciless treatment that Stoke-on-Trent crowds hand out to hyped rubbish ("Uh-oh, we're in trouble" alright).

My favourite bit was one of the girls shouted out that the crowd were all "Norfern, farkin, 70s winkers" to which some wag shouted "Watch thee tong or I'll tell thee mutha", that just had us all in hysterics.

Well, the Shampoo quote was heavily-stylized Essex-stylee (mostly intended to get the profanities through my rigorous, mod's censorship).

The Stoke heckler was slightly sending up his own accent (or perhaps had been kept in a windowless room and only conversed with his grandparents).

As for me, I'm born a Southerner and, despite a long stint in various bits of the north, it hasn't much rubbed off. People think I'm "posh" (talking, I mean. They don't think I'm a tone-deaf, balloon-breasted, mouse-waisted publicity-seeking machine).

Essex?? we dont have any 'Winkers' down here, if you went round winking at people you would end up in Basildon accident and emergency, along with all the other winkers.

Ever watched an Elvis video? He did that all the time, the title eludes but on one video his left hand 'just happens' to be behind a column for each solo guitar bit. And he still rocked. Not fair Mad

A drummer we once played with told me, that Charlie Watts of the Stones used to have a drummer behind a curtain filling for him, what a load of B*****S, everything he said after that comment i veiwed with great suspicion, the things some people say.

Might be an urban myth. I'd heard something similar, but there's no evidence of it. I wonder if somebody got mixed up with Floyd's Nick Mason?

I distinctly remember seeing a pre-Live8 gig and Floyd were openly playing with a 2nd drummer. Nick was taking it nice and easy, putting the basic groove down and resting his Ferarri throttle ankle (and gearshift wrist) while the younger buck did all the flash.

Seeing as Nick is incredibly affable (he had the first F40 in Britain and let Car magazine test drive it. Chucked the staffer the keys, "Watch out for the hangar doors when you're reversing out" and went back to his cuppa) I didn't find this too outrageous.

I mean, can you see Jay Kay doing that? Two things stick in my mind about the diminutive Stevie Wonder copyist.

a) He drives like Stevie. He managed to total three pieces of exotica while filming a video egofest.
b) He got very irate when he reckoned one of a crowd of paps had scratched his new Bentley. He picked on the only pap shorter than him (took some finding) and did the Hagler/Hearns eyeball. The pap beautifully nutted him, splashing his nose the width of a tabloid front-page. Laugh? Oh yes.

I saw Pink Floyd's first "The Wall" gig at Earl's Court, back in the day, and the entire band were doubled. Two drummers, two keyboardists, two bassists, and two guitarists (the extra one being Snowy White).
