I have a gordon smith SG which plays and sounds great but has rubbish tuning stability. I've had the thing set up serval times and never improved the problem really so I was thinking of having it fitted with locking machineheads. The SG has a tunamatic and stop tail and brass nut.
What's everybodies experience with these? Do they make a big difference and if so what brand did you get?
cheers |

| I have standard Kluson tuners on my 1996 Gibson SG, our set in the band is anything from 2hrs to 3hrs, i play the SG for the full set and never tune it, why don't you just change the tuners? |

| Yes, I've had the "ping, gdoink, downg" effect from rubbish tuners suddenly dropping me a random number of tones. As Lee says, you don't have to go the whole hog of locking tuners (although there's no reason why not). A decent set of the usuals (Gotoh, Grover, Schaller) should solve the problem without requiring locking tuners, though. |
