D-28 Authentic 1937

1937 Martin D-28 guitars are sought after by vintage enthusiasts and collectors, thanks to its unique bracing, Adirondack spruce top and comfortable neck width. Now Martin is releasing a reproduction model based on these collectible guitars, providing the same look and feel without the problems that come with old guitars.

Martin Guitars found a worthy vintage guitar from their own collection and decided to have all the details manually replicated, resulting in a premium handcrafted reproduction. All important details were measured and carefully followed by Martin’s team of artisan luthiers, down to the use of hide glue, bracing measurements and other fine details.

Since Brazilian rosewood is now considered endangered, Martin decided to utilize solid Madagascar rosewood for the back and sides. This is a major change that may not be liked by vintage purists, but it will be appreciated for practical and environmental reasons. Martin believes that this African timber is a viable alternative to the now unobtainable Brazilian wood, especially since they grow in similar latitude and have the same structural integrity. The sides are carved to follow the guitar’s 14-fret Dreadnought shape.

Important distinguishing factors of the guitar’s body remain unchanged, including the use of solid Adirondack spruce for the top and the use of hand-scalloped “forward shifted” X bracing that faithfully mimics the bracing found on vintage 1937 D-28s. All tonewoods are thinned to exactly match pre-war specifications, resulting in the same resonance as the vintage museum guitar.

The guitar features a solid mahogany neck with authentic 1937 barrel and heel, having a scale length of 25.4″ and a nut width of 1.75″. Solid black ebony is carved to create the guitar’s 14-fret fingerboard that feature vintage correct “Diamonds & Squares – Long Pattern” inlays.

Other features include solid black ebony bridge, Waverly nickel tuners with butterbean knobs, bold herringbone top inlay, diamond 1937 taper headstock, Delmar tortoise color pickguard and a style 28 rosette.
