Taylor introduces the K28e, an all-koa “Grand Orchestra” model at the 2013 Musikmesse trade show in Frankfurt, Germany.

This new all-koa model is part of a year-long rollout dedicated to this recently released new body shape from Taylor.

Koa is known for its blend of mahogany like midrange but with a high-end sparkle. Now Taylor mixes koa’s unique tone profile with the big and yet balanced voice brought about by Taylor’s newest shape. The result is an elegant looking instrument with a unique tonality.

In an effort to revoice the the Taylor Jumbo shape, their luthiers experimented with new body dimensions to mix the tonal personality of dreadnought with the big sound of the jumbo shape. The result is the Grand Orchestra shape, which is slightly longer than a traditional dreadnought, featuring a tighter waist and a wider bottom bout to heighten the tonal properties, and a deeper body depth to increase volume output. Now Taylor is bringing this new shape to the test by incorporating the use of an less conventional tonewoods.

Andy Powers, Taylor master builder, shares: “The koa top tends to impart a more controlled attack to the guitar’s sound compared to spruce. The koa top makes a more subtle entrance. The notes have a graceful, ‘fashionably late’ quality, giving the player a smooth and sweet-sounding sustain.” The K28e comes with Taylor’s proprietary Adirondack spruce bracing for the Grand Orchestra shape, which is a hybrid parabolic and scalloped design that aims to improve the balance and responsiveness of a big-bodied guitar.

The K28e will debut with a special release of 100 First Edition models, just like the other Grand Orchestra models that have been introduced earlier this year (the 518e, 618e and 918e). The guitar also features wood-rich embellishments that further enhance its looks, including a rosewood and maple rosette, Indian rosewood binding and an elegant looking Island Vine inlay on the fretboard. The First Edition model K28e guitars will come with a custom label and ships in a Deluxe “First Edition” hardshell case. Once the guitar is registered, the owner will receive a custom GO First Edition guitar strap, a numbered certificate of authenticity, and a special commemorative booklet.
