MOD Kits DIY MOD102+ Tube Amp Kit

MOD Kits DIY introduces the upgraded version of their Do-It-Yourself tube amplifier kit, now with added features.

MOD Kits DIY MOD102+

This new tube amplifier “kit” lets you build your own tube amp to your specs like the original, only this one has improved tone shaping capabilities and it comes with a 3-way progressive toggle switch for off-standby-power setting.

The MOD102+ kit will let you build an all analog vacuum tube amp that follows traditional American circuit design combined with British style Class A output section. It utilizes two tubes that are included in the kit, one ECC803, a JJ Electronic brand preamp tube and one EL84, also from JJ Electronic brand but for the power tube section.

The two tubes combine to drive the single channel amp, which in turn pumps out 8W of output power with 8 Ω output impedance. This all tube design is meant to give the amp authentic classic tube amp tones, although solid-state diodes where used only for full-wave rectification. A vintage style pilot lamp and screw-on jewel cover is included to let you know when the power of the amp is on.

The “+” label of this kit denotes the expanded tone shaping features it carries. Most notable of which is the three-position progressive toggle switch that lets you switch between off, standby and power on state. Push-pull knob functionality is also introduced in the MOD102+ kit, adding a total of 3 new parameters to control while still retaining a three knob configuration.

The company expounds on the new parameters: “Pull out the bass control knob for “mid boost”, pull out the treble control knob for “bright”, and pull out the volume control knob for “turbo”. These new features and a JJ ECC803-S (a long plate 12AX7 known for its complex mid range tones) allow for a wider variety of tones and extra control for the user.”

MOD Kits DIY MOD102+

As expected from the company, this new MOD Kits DIY Amp Kit is designed for both novice and experienced musicians. It’s easy enough for non-builders to experience putting together their own amp, and it has enough depth for experienced gear heads to modify and customize to their liking.

All the parts that you need and everything you need to know to build the kit is included, just follow the step-by-step instructions manual and you’re all set. The point-to-point wiring design makes building the kit even more convenient, the only thing you’ll need are basic hand tools, a soldering iron and solder.

Once you’ve put them all together, you can then easily cover the circuit with the included pre-drilled enclosure. You can then customize the look of the enclosure by applying color/paint, or by adding decals or stickers.

Note that the amp utilizes a Cathode biased class A power tube operation, which means that no bias adjustment is needed. Other features include Carbon film resistors, metalized polyester coupling caps, a Hammond Mfg 269EX power transformer and P-T31 single ended output transformer.

Once straight assembled, the new MOD102+ amp head is expected to weigh in at 5.55lbs, making it a nifty portable tube amp. Dimensions of the amp will be 10″ Width x 6″ Depth x 5 1/8″ Height.

The new MOD102+ amp kit is now available for $265. For more information, head over to MOD Kits DIY.
